Pastornicky?

So according to Jim Bowden the Braves have decided against Pastornicky as their longtime shortstop? Any chance the Brewers could make a move for him and what do you think he would cost? Maybe a Thronburg & Schafer.

Not now. The prospect that they prefer over him just finished 2011 in Class A+. He's at least a year and likely two away from the big leagues.

This article makes it sound like Simmons may actually overtake Pastornicky. I for one would love to make this acquisition in the event Simmons beats out Pastornicky.

As much as I would love to send Nyjer their way to make room for Schafer on the MLB roster, I think it would more than likely take more. What would a Pastornicky cost to acquire?

I don't know why we'd want to include Thornburg in trade offers. It won't be long and we are going to need pitching, trading our top pitching prospects isn't the way to build a young and cheap pitching staff.

The Braves promote prospects very aggressively. Heyward and Freeman were full time regulars in the big leagues at age 20 and 21 respectively. It wouldn't shock me in the least if they went with Simmons over Pastornicky. It's not like Pastornicky has much of an edge experience wise.

That being said, they'd be foolish not to hedge their bet by keeping Pastornicky who has options. There's always the potential for position change down the road too. No way they trade him now.

I wathced some of the Braves game on MLBtv last night. Simmons started, and all the talk was about the SS race and how good Simmons has looked. There's a good chance that he's the starter in Atlanta from Opening Day. I don't know whether this would make Pastornicky available, or what it would cost, but this is certainly worth looking into. Our well's pretty dry at SS, and I'd love to have someone at AAA ready to take over.

Off topic, watching that game made me a bit jealous of Atlanta. They're playoff caliber now, and have a lot of really good at-or-near MLB-ready prospects. Good problems to have.

Off topic(2), I love MLBtv. They're playing 150 Spring Training games this month! Everytime I turn on the TV, no matter what time of day, there's another game on.

Atlanta does have a good farm system but for whatever reasons they haven't gotten as far in the post-season as the Brewers in the last 3-4 years... they do seem like a logical trade partner

I like Tyler Pastornicky, he's got potential. I'd like him even more if he got on-base even more but a .345 career minor league OBP ain't bad at all. He hit .314 last season between AA & AAA. It'll be interesting to see how he develops

I'm not sure how the list goes after that, but I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head, dlk.

Not sure, the last SS the Braves traded turned out juuust fine in Toronto.

I can think of a couple of Texas Rangers who would disagree with that sentiment.

I think when you start with these nonsensical arbitrary rules and give up on your own scouting reports and the opinions of your scouts, you're not really going anywhere.

Well I wasn't making any sort of ruling, more of just fun. Of course not every player the Braves have traded is garbage.

Fwiw, Pastornicky was named the Braves' starting SS. I caught that on the MLB Network ticker last night.

This isn't specifically related to Pastornicky, but it's Braves-related & I didn't want to start a new thread.

Chatted with a Braves fan for a while last night, & he was venting his frustrations with the ATL ownership situation. Long story short, the current ownership group for the Braves is expected by many to look to slash payroll before long, in an effort to reduce debt in order to help sell the team as soon after 2012 as possible (link 1, link 2). That means more expensive and/or older players like McCann, Bourn, Prado, Jurrjens, Hudson, Uggla, Diaz, Hinske, etc. will either be allowed to walk in free agency or shopped on the trade market. If the Braves are somehow out of the playoff race this season, they could be very busy sellers. But even if 2012 goes well, it seems like they'll try to move the more expensive players still under contract in the offseason.

My first reaction is Boo Hoo. As long as Bill (the liar) Bartholomay still is connected with the Braves (he's still Chairman Emeritus) I'll never stop hating the Braves. What, they don't have a new city to move to? I thought all that Coca Cola money and that fat regional TV contract was supposed to be the answer?

The fact is Atlanta is a horrible sports town. Always has been. Always will be.

To your point, I'd be all for poaching some of their good players. Some of us remember when they poached an entire Milwaukee team.

The gist of the story this same fan related to me about Liberty Media's ownership & acquisition of the Braves from News Corp./Time Warner was that it came with plenty of strings attached. They were required to retain basically everyone in positions of leadership with the org., along with other rules -- Biz of Baseball story, Biz of Baseball follow-up.

So it's nothing near anyone complaining about payroll or anything like that. It's Liberty Media wanting to unload the Braves because the tax breaks they got along with the acquisition & stock trade with Time Warner are set to expire after 2012.

I agreed at the time, but including Thornburg in any trade is starting to get more and more absurd.

I think he has the upside of an ace. People have had him pegged as a mid rotation type guy for years, but the guy just continues to dominate every step of the way.

Just another outstanding start to the season at AA, dominating hitters with mid to upper 90's stuff. No, he's not Lincecum, but he doesn't need to be. There are legit similarities there beyond height and velocity.
