autographs, signings, and tips, part 1

jason21nl

I called about the Hardy/Fielder free signing mentioned above. They are only allowing one autographer per person and they are expecting a TON of people to attend, so the lines may be long. The person I talked to wasn't sure about what times the players would be there, but he guessed it would only be for an hour at the most.

Just thought I'd share, but I think I'll pass on this one.

i asked him to sign the sweet spot on my baseball and handed it to him so it was facing him. he gives me a sly smile, spins the ball around to the mlb logo and signs below it?

Many players will not sign on the sweet spot anymore unless :

A) It's a team ball (more than one signature)

B) It's a fee based signing

Kind of sucks, I know. Ryan Braun did the same thing for my son - signed right below the MLB logo. Weeks wouldn't do it either. He actually said he "couldn't" sign the sweet spot. I don't know if some of these guys are contractually obligated in some way or if they just don't want people to ebay their balls.

On the flip side, I got Gorman Thomas Friday and he signed the sweet spot without even being asked.

maybe that was it. i`ve never had a player not sign the sweet spot for me before...but i only have gotten a few autos so far. i had no prob getting rickie, prince, bush, hall, tbow, hart suppan or hardy all to sign the sweet spot before...sheeter is the first to not do it for me...i kinda thought he was being a smart a. but maybe you are correct and he just doesn`t sign sweet spots....anyone know for sure???

some of them are under contracts and can't sign certain items or on the sweet spot..I got pujols once, and he said that he couldn't sign a certain bat, jersey, or sweet spot...

weeks is very leary of his items ending up on ebay...if he sees the "sellers" trying to get autographs, he won't come over and sign. Last year, I got Sheets during auto friday and he too signed right under the logo..he also signs his autograh Ben Sheet without the s..

when I got Weeks, he tried to personalize my photo, I convinced him not too, but then he signed it in the bottom left. I believe Sheets, Weeks, Hardy, and Fielder don't sweetspot b/c of contracts and such like some have said. However, apparantly Jeff's Sports is going to eventually own rights to Sheets, so they should have shows in where he will sweetspot.

weeks likes to do that..he hates his stuff on ebay..if he sees you often by the players parking lot, eventually he won't sign for you anymore..he'll assume that you're selling his items.

I was in at Jeff's today and they are going to be having Tony Gwynn Jr, Rickie Weeks, and Prince Fielder coming up for signings. The Fielder signing is going to be a private signing.

They also said they were working on getting Ryan Braun.

Weeks is worth paying for, since he personalizes and doesn't sweet spot, thanks for the info cweber...Did they release the dates, or just say that they were coming up, or are you so important that you can't release all of that to the publichttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

The Fielder signing is going to be a private signing.

What does that mean?

Thanks for all the info cweber. I am so going to the Braun signing, I will do whatever I have to make sure Im free that day. I think I might go to Gwynn as well. Fielder is probably going to be expensive.

because his agent is Scott Boras, high profile players tend to do this, he has done a signing at Jeff's before, also from what I remember, it is cheaper for the customer's if he does it private, and I would imagine that Jeff's doesn't want to charge $40 per autograph, because I honestly imagine that is about what Boras would demand.

Jeff told me, and I was there that at the last signing you weren't allowed to take pictures with Prince, you had about 2 seconds at the table and then you had to leave, and the soul purpose of that is because he has Boras as an agent, does that make sense??

Jeff's has private signings with Favre all the time, except they get everything for themselves, and re-sell it. I personally don't go or buy into private signings because I like to meet the players, that is part of the reason why i like autographs so much, the worth is cool, but i like the overall "personal" value of it more...

What Jeff told me today involved nothing about Scott Boras. All they said was Prince did not want to do a public signing, he is shy guy to begin with. It will also be a little cheaper for a private signing.

The reason people could not get photos with Prince last year was not because of Scott Boras being his agent, that does not make sense.. Last year when Prince signed at Jeff's he was late for signing. They said no photos with him because they had to through 300 people, the mail in stuff, and all the stuff for Jeff's. They were on a major time crunch for everything, and had to get him out of there so he could get back to the ball park.

no, they do the signings through the agents, ask him, they have to go through the agent, when I bought my tickets for the Fielder signing last year I bought them in person and Daryl told me that no pictures were allowed and he seemed kind of ticked about it, and he told me about how that was not going tobe allowed I asked why, and he said because of his agent and the rights, and then I said Boras is a jerk, I'm not making it up.

Sure maybe Fielder is shy, or whatever else, but Boras decided weather he is signing or not, don't say that he isn't because that is just not true...

I don't make up when there will be a signing, and I didn't make up what I just told BrewCrew, frankly it ticks me off when I hear something from a source, relay it, and then someone tells me that I am wrong, it is annoying that people ask, is that confirmed or something like that, I don't say it, if I don't know it...

by the way Jason, what a great idea for a thread, I bet this thing is longer than the drunk thread by next year, you must be proud of yourself

funny you mentioned that, because I was acutaly thinking to myself that I have never posted a thread that lasted longer than like 30 posts....people enjoy autographs, so hopefully this will last for some time.....

a lot of autograph signings don't allow pictures to keep the line moving..and also, when a player does a private signing a lot of the time it is because they are under contract with someone, that the agent set them up with...Prince might be shy, but he has done a lot of signings so I'm sure that doesn't bother him...he was at summerfest last year which was free with admission.

i understand the whole picture thing, but before the Fielder signing last year, they had a Turnbow signing, and when I bought tickets they said no photos, and whatever else, I have never taken a picture with a player, and it isn't on the top of my priority list, but I know some people like it.

Bottom line- no matter what, the signing is done through the agent, obviously the player has a say, just like in a contract, but the fact of the matter is in this case Boras has a huge say in how Prince does his signings.
