Renteria

TURBO

Just found this little nugget. Didn't see this anywhere here so I thought I'd post it.

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms Edgar Renteria intends to return for his 17th major league season.Renteria was active for just 96 games this past season and will likely settle for a non-guaranteed contract as a backup infielder. According to Heyman, the Astros, Cubs and Brewers are among the teams that could be interested.

Since the idea of Izturis ever holding a bat in his hands, let alone starting for a month because of an injury, scares the life out of me, I'd be pretty happy if they got him to camp with a non-guaranteed deal.

There will be better players cut or available via trade than Renteria at the end of spring training if your feared scenario takes place.

I don't really like either choice, as Izturis is probably a low .600 OPS guy with good/great defense, while Renteria is probably a mid-to-high .600 OPS guy who probably isn't very good at defense at this point (at least not at SS). Maybe it's just the recent memories of our defense costing us a chance at the World Series, but I'd take the good fielding, light hitting utility IF over the poor fielding, slightly-less-light-hitting utility IF.

If we were talking the pre-2007 Renteria, then it's a no-brainer, but I don't think he's that player anymore, so let's go with the guy who can play the field.

So appartently Melvin offered him a NRI. Can't say i blame him. Would have been interesting to see how a Renteria/Izturis battle would have turned out

He did?

Do you have a link to that information?

I myself would have been fine with Renteria off the bench..

That tells me the Brewers still aren't content w/ Izturis, Bianchi and the others battling it out for the backup MI position. I think Renteria would have been a nice addition. I'm betting Miguel Tejada is going to be getting a call soon, if he hasn't already.

Tejada is awful. His ability to play SS is really limited. Renteria would be better. At least he can still handle the position adequately (at least from what I saw of him the last year or two.

I'm not sold on Izturis. His bat has been so bad that last few years. I think Renteria would be better.
