Brewers Maryvale Spring Training Lease

Brewer Fanatic Contributor
How much revenue does a spring training facility bring in anyway?

Yeah, Sedona is very cool and well worth the relatively short drive from the Phoenix area. Beautiful views.

I think people that think there isn't enough to do around Phoenix compared to Florida are pretty nuts. I get the appeal of going to the beaches, but still...there is plenty to see and do in Arizona.

Like playing any of the almost 200 golf courses in the Phoenix area. While I was out there visiting last week, the Arizona Republic had a great feature on all of the courses in the Valley, listed the price ranges of each and had a map of where they were located. I know not everyone plays golf, but for those of us that do, Arizona is incredible for it's variety of courses. I visit my "snowbird" parents just about every spring, and if we aren't at a Brewer game, we are probably golfing.

P.S. Everyone should also venture out to Tortilla Flat. A beautiful drive through the mountains to a great little (population 6, so I mean little) old western town.

Funny you mention that...

Interesting article but I guess I was looking at it from the team's perspective. How much does it hurt the Brewers financially if they aren't getting big attendance numbers? I would think Attanasio would bolt immediately if he saw $$ in a different community.

UGH...Living in Southern California I barely get to see the Brewers much other than in March. Having said that, I doubt Mark A, who is based in LA, is seriously thinking about moving this team out of Arizona, across the country to Florida and losing the easy 1 hour flight from LA to Phoenix to see his team. I hope I am right. :ohwell

Booo!

Although, seems like plenty of time before they would have to make that decision (have to give a year's notice starting in 2015). So much could happen between now and then, like offers from other Phoenix suburbs such as Scottsdale, Surprise, Goodyear, etc.

FWIW, Haudricourt said on Twitter right after talk about that came out on Monday that, "While Mark Attanasio is owner of the Brewers, they will do all the can to stay in Arizona." I think all the talk of them moving to Florida is just that...talk.

Glad to hear that Invader...Can only hope the talks with the Westworld site (or something similar) as mentioned earlier in this thread, can be renewed and the Brewers get out of Maryvale.

On a further note, looking at the Blue Jays Dunedin site on Google Earth would not entice me to move out of Maryvale. The stadium looks old and the training facility is almost 3 miles away as the crow flies

Maybe the Brewers and Astros can partner and get a new facility built somewhere in Arizona. Seems that is the way the Dodgers/Sox, Royals/Rangers, Indians/Reds & Rockies/Diamondbacks all got their wonderful new complexes built recently.

It would be so great if they could get closer to Scottsdale. It's so much nicer over there. I'm sure the players would love that as well. Maryvale was fine, but the area is a dump. I didn't feel it was unsafe, just not even in the same galaxy as Scottsdale.

Yeah, having been down there once for Spring Training, it seems like that would be a great plan (moving to Scottsdale). The idea of teaming with the Astros to get a new facility built is intriguing and I hope the Brewers are at least exploring it.

Really hope the wife and I can get back down there someday, though it will probably be at least a couple years at this point.

My only complaint about Scottsdale is the Giants facility and parking. I prefer the other sites that have large surface parking lots. To me the absolute worst facility in AZ is Oakland's....they don't even have an outfield berm.

There has been on and off talk over the years on this board of Brewers possibly moving their ST to FL. I have never been a fan of that line of thought and now I have another reason why I'm not a fan.....FL Spring Training ticket prices!!! Yikes! My family and I were in FL last week and we were talking about going to see the Braves game on Thursday night. About 2 hours before we were going to go I decided that I would just make sure seats were available. I looked at the Braves web site and the Berm was $30 and the Lawn was $40!! Those were the cheap seats!! What I don't understand is that when I look at ticket prices for tomorrow's Braves game it's $16 for the Berm and $23 for Lawn. So, not sure if they have some sort of demand pricing thing going on (although there seemed to be plenty of seats available for the game we wanted to go to), but still very high priced compared to the Brewers ST tix. Needless to say...we decided not to go.

I decided to also look at Tiger's ticket prices for ST to see if it was a FL thing.....they were $20 for bleachers and $35 for the Berm!!! These are exhibition games where maybe half of the "stars" play in any particular game and usually for only half the game! Who's paying these prices to go to these games! And the berms at Atlanta's and Detroit's facility are pretty small.

We have gone to ST in AZ about 10 times in the last 12 or 13 years. I believe Brewers Berm prices are $8 and the highest price ticket anywhere at Maryvale is $28. Most AZ parks have large berm areas that circle the entire outfield and you can usually get tickets out there on the day of the game for no more than $10.

So..I hope the Brewers never move their ST to FL.

If I remember correctly there seems to be a lot of space near where the Sox/Dodgers just built their complex. There's the mall, the arena, and U of Phoenix Stadium. Seemed like a nice area.

my folks have a place within walking distance of there. moving to right there would be awesome.

Id love that considering i live right off the 303, and now that it is fully connected from the I-10 to I-17 its not a bad deal. That whole area is really growing too

It would be about a 10 min ride for me but where would they put it? The substation is right off of the 303 and el mirage and everything after that is all residential area. The closest gas station would be on Bell or on Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant. I am not sure this would work out all that well.

This would probably be a better location:

Happy Valley and the 17

Though I wouldn't mind your location as it would be really really really really close to where I live.
