Mobile Forum (Latest: Tapatalk available… post #20)

If considering this, only one mobile app would be best. I do know Tapatalk works well with phpBB. Perhaps you guys with more experience of using these could use this topic to discuss which app works best for you. On the installation end, there is not a lot to it.

Great feedback so far, guys. The only reason I am saying one and only one is that whatever is installed affects everyone, whether they use it or not. For each additional feature added, there is a cost in speed and performance. On balance, an app works great because it does generate some additional load and it does generate some additional bandwidth initially but at the end of the day, this actually reduces the bandwidth used. Bandwidth is not a great concern but if a few thousand of you all hit at the same time, it might be. :)

So, all I am saying is that adding one app would probably be a great idea but adding more than one would probably cause an undesirable affect overall.

I'm talking another look.

The problem isn't that we can't do it. It's more that staff isn't in a good position to test this before releasing it to the masses. I'd hate to see anyone pay for something and find out that it doesn't work. :)

Does anyone here see an advantage of one over the other (Forum Runner vs. Tapatalk)? I see that Tapatalk supports Blackberry, but that may not be relevant in a year anyway. Neither mentions Windows Phone 7 / Phone 8 / RT support. And neither offers separate Android phone and tablet apps. It looks like cost is about the same.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I'm a Forum Runner guy currently, but I would just get Tapatalk since I would use it for other forums as well and it probably is the better choice.

If the issue is with the staff testing it, you could probably get enough regular users who already have the app who would be happy to beta test for you. I know I would be one of those people.

My thought is that Tapatalk is likely the more appropriate choice, too. It's available for a lot of platforms, and just as importantly, I "know" a couple of people who've deployed it on their boards.

I guess either one will hit our database hard to begin with as the app would be caching as much as it can. After that initial hump, we should be using less bandwidth than we were previously. A slow time would be a good time for deployment, but slow times are tough to predict on this board.

I'm not sure if there's a practical way to beta test or not. It's going to eat bandwidth for a while no matter what. It might be possible to skip the nag screen initially, though, and simply announce its availability to start with. If that's feasible, we can kick in the nag screen once people tell us that it's working well. If it isn't feasible to skip the nag screen, I guess we'd just get it going and hope for the best. :)

I guess I'm confused why setting up Tapatalk will use more bandwidth. Its my understanding that setting up mobile apps with forums dramatically reduces bandwidth used.

It sounds to me like it's short term pain for long term gain. The caching process, which ultimately results in bandwidth savings, will access the database a lot in the beginning.

I'll set this up as soon as I can. I haven't been around the site as much as usual lately. I want to make sure I'm readily available after we kick this in in case there are issues.

I'm hoping to do something about this late in the week. As I mentioned, I want to be able to commit to being around for a couple of days in case there are issues. Also, there are a couple of server issues that I'd like to see cleaned up before installing something new. These issues are being worked on right now.

Tapatalk should now be operational both here and at LambeauLeap. If you're using a mobile device, you should run into a nag screen prompting you to set it up. If you dismiss the nag screen, you allegedly won't run into it again.

Here's some poop from Tapatalk:

Tapatalk is a forum app on the iPhone, Android, webOS, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry. Tapatalk Forum App provides super fast on-the-go forum access to majority of the discussion forums that has activated the Tapatalk plugin.

Hmm, I'm unable to link the app to either website. I can find other forums I use by searching or navitaging through their system, but it seems like Brewerfan and Lambeauleap are no where to be found. I tried Brewerfan.net, Brewerfan, forum.brewerfan.net, ect.

I think I may have to register this with Tapatalk. I'll check into it. Thanks for reporting. :)

LambeauLeap should be ready now too. It took a little longer than I thought it would because I had to whip up avatars to match Tapatalk's specs. Let me know if they look icky. I didn't want to put a lot of time into them. :)

EDIT: If you need to enter URLs, these are the ones that are registered:
