Rich Harden

I've got a little time to kill today, so I figured that now is as good a time as ever to start my obligatory annual Rich Harden thread. He hasn't been very good as a starter the past few years and has seemingly lost a touch of his filthy stuff, but he can still get a strikeout a good deal of the time. He seems like a decent low risk/ high reward type guy to step into one of the Hawkins/Saito spots if he's willing to accept a relief role (I'm assuming that Veras has one of these locked up). He only got $1.5 million last year, so I'm assuming that he wouldn't command much, plus he's Canadian....

I have a feeling Harden's career has went the way of Ben Sheets. One pitch away from his arm ripping off, flying into the stands, and hurting someone very badly. If you were DM, would you want that on your conscience?

I can't believe how people want to throw away $1-2M every year on someone all but certain to be injured. Unless you can get a guy like this on a minor league deal, let the risk takers throw their cash away. Healthy pitchers get hurt enough, never mind injured ones.

Good one. At least Harden and Sheets were actually good at one time. Let me throw two more names out there: Mark Prior and Brandon Webb. Both are reportedly going to throw for teams in March.

There was a lot more incentive to do this type of thing in the old CBA, since you could give someone a shot to regain their form, then get draft pick compensation in return.

Not that it was the only reason to sign a guy like that, but now there is one less reason to do so.
