Homer Bailey

Homer is supposedly up on the block if the Reds sign Oswalt. Is there any way the Brewers could get him being that he's in our division? I know he hasn't exactly panned out yet, but I thought he was improving. Not sure what we would have to give up or if DM is even interested.

Well the Cubs did trade Sean Marshall to the Reds who turned around and gave them Travis Wood. I would absolutely think it is possible. However, where would we match up with them is the question. LF and 3B is the thing they are missing off the top of my head. Obviously we aren't trading Braun and I don't think Gomez, Aoki or Morgan would bring back a Bailey nor would I think Green to fill in at 3B would be enough.

The only way I see a deal working is if we were willing to deal Hart and the Reds put him into LF. Not sure I would do that either seeing as Braun could be suspended, leaving us with a OF of Aoki, Gomez and Morgan. Talk about a lack of power.

I'd trade Rogers for him....

SP is a team strength so the only way I see use acquiring Bailey would be if we gave up one of our starting 5 in a three-way trade. Anything else doesn't make sense, as it either leaves a hole in the team (Hart idea) or just isn't worth it (giving up one of our top prospects).

Drew Stubbs fanned 205 times last year, a ridiculous number for a guy with average power numbers and posted a very mediocre .329 OBP in the leadoff spot. He also hit just .226 off RHP. I would think they'd have some interest in Morgan and a 2nd tier pitching prospect like a Heckathorn or a Scarpetta. Remember if they don't have room for Bailey, they have to move him and that lowers their asking price.

Phillips is a FA after this year too, so they might want to bolster 2B.

I can't see the Reds trading Bailey to the Brewers. Though it seems like he's been a prospect forever and hasn't been all he was supposed to be, he's still young with potential to put it together. If Bailey gets caught in a numbers game at the end of Spring Training, there will likely not be a shortage of suitors. Back in the 90's the Brewers would get guys like this once in a while (remember Bill Pulsipher and Rocky Coppinger?) Why would they trade him to one of their primary division rivals? Barring injury, I don't see a spot for him on the Brewers anyway.

I think he'd be significantly better than Narveson moving forward as he looks like he's starting to put it together. I can't imagine why the Red would decide to go this long with him and just when he looks like he's starting to hit, dump him for a roster spot?

Stubbs is pretty young yet and plays good defense and is a very good basestealer when he does get on, and is a patient hitter. I don't think they are ready to give up on him or platoon him at this point.
Don't confuse the inability to put the ball in play with patience.

And don't confuse strikeouts & batting average as useful ways to evaluate a player.
Of course they're useful. Lets not take this thing too far the other way now.

They're not as useful as some previously thought, but 200+ K's or a .195 BA like Carlos Pena are BOTH useful ways to evaluate them.

To say that the Reds would be down on Stubbs because of his strikeouts & low batting average is to incorrectly read that situation, imo. They are not useful stats to use as inherent proof, they obviously aren't good indicators though. The Reds actually appear to be high on Stubbs because he's a good athlete, defender, & hits for power at a premium defensive position. It's not his fault Dusty Baker had him lead off last year because he's fast.
