That is the number of acknowledged US combat fatalities through yesterday (including the confederacy). The actual number is somewhat higher as the total number of military fatalities in the revolutionary war, war of 1812, and korean war are not known, and I don't have the numbers for military actions that weren't wars.

 

I agree that remembrance is important. Those 1.2 million plus made the ultimate sacrifice, some for a cause that was obvious, some for one that wasn't, but all deserve our thanks.
