I never heard of that guy. I wonder why Whitewater doesn't give him the boot? Maybe he withdraws from all his classes rather than fails them, or maybe he has like 300 low level credits.

i dont think they have any legal way of doing so.

well, that's what I was curious about. From his site, he does claim to be earning credits though, so I guess they probably can't kick him out.

Not that I think they should, I just think that from what I know about universities (having worked in an admissions office), they hate this kind of publicity. Universities do everything possible to graduate people as quickly as possible so that their overall graduation rates stay up. The U of Minnesota even closed one of their colleges while I worked there because it was too much of a drag on their graduation rates.

I think the guy is just a leech on society. Contribute something for Pete's sake!

I view this guy in the same manner as the happy youngster. They give our state a bad name!

What? Flip burgers at McDonald's? This guy is a tool, the state of Wisconsin changed some rule because of him, so he cannot get in state tuition.

I have a friend who went to Whitewater and he said he was a tool and goes to all the under age parties.

When I finished college and left Oshkosh, I was really sad and depressed that I'd never again get to do things like drink beer on a couch in my front yard with my roommates on a Tuesday afternoon. I was amazed at how quickly I got over those crazy thoughts. And it's funny what a complete ghetto the off campus housing looks to me now. I'm sure it looked exactly the same then but then I thought it was the greatest place to live ever. I used to come home to visit my parents for the weekend or whatever and I couldn't wait to get back to school. A few weeks ago I had some banking to take care of in Oshkosh and I was there for about 20 minutes and I couldn't get the hell out of there fast enough. I'm not exactly sure what my point is. I wasn't getting any chicks like Johnny's getting though. Maybe that's it- the chicks.

why doesn't he just do like normal skeevy guys that want to hang out with 18 year old girls and go to grad school for a few decades? Some of the grad students at the college I went to looked like they had been there for even longer than this guy has been at Whitewater.

First of all, I just want to say that I LOVE this site. I've been following it for a few years now, but I've never posted anything until now! I have loved the Brewers ever since I was little! I was born in 1983, however, so I guess I'm not old enough to have seen a winning season! But I am definitely looking forward to that this year!!

I graduated from Whitewater a couple of years ago, and I actually hadn't heard of Johnny Lechner until my senior year there; I think that's when he started to get a lot of attention. I don't actually know him, but a few years ago, he came to speak at one of my Habitat for Humanity meetings, because he was running for student government president (thankfully, he didn't win), and he just acted like he was the best thing that ever lived and we should feel lucky to be in his presence. He was even on a talk show last year and they interviewed his parents. One of his parents actually supported his decision and "just wanted him to be happy" and the other one seemed pretty embarassed of the whole situation. I'm just happy to know that I graduated in 4 years and am enjoying the match on my 401k, while he is stuck paying double the tuition, and probably won't have much of a future, after everyone gets tired of hearing that he's coming back for "one more year." Pretty soon the hype will die down and he'll have nothing to show for his 13+ years in college.

He was on the Letterman show and one of People Magazine's "hottest bachelors" or whatever but it seems like whatever hype was there has died down. Maybe because he was studying abroad. I don't exactly see him blowing up into a big star or anything though.

I hope your right, I wish everyone would just ignore him. Do we really think he will say 2008 is it, and he will graduate?

I know in my undergrad degree (Bachelor of Science), we had to complete it in 10 or less years I believe for the credits not to expire. I wonder if his credits are no good from when he was 18 or whatever...

Anyways, the guy can do what he wants and I hope he's not just slacking but in fact taking a wide array of things (I doubt this), but he's missing out on better things in life.

College is fun but work is a lot easier and more rewarding (because you actually create things instead of doing learning things....and you get paid) and I still live a similar lifestyle as to when I was in college. Except now I have a lot more money to spend on things to go with money I can now save.

Plus, if he likes college so much why not get your bachelors degree over the course of like 5 or 6 years and then go on to grad school for 3 or 4 more? At least when you get out you'll have a couple of degrees and a master to show for it. But then, I suppose this isn't his purpose.

Sounds like a lazy, loser to me. I mean, is it really fun going to college parties and being "that guy" at the things? You know, the guy whose a little older than everyone else and is usually balding at the college kegger....

Oh well, I know some people near 30 who have blown the last 12 or so years a lot worse than this guy.

I've only spent one night in Whitewater in my life, and I got a ticket for peeing in the woods. Never going back.

At UWEC, there was a guy who worked at Erberts and Gerberts who was in his mid 30's who was complaining one day in Poli Sci that he had to go to the dean and beg again because he was going to go again next semester, and he apparently had been going so long (his whole life, minus two years spent teaching), he needed special permission to register, a waiver. Of course, he had several degrees and a couple graduate ones as well.

When I was a senior in HS, our English teacher, a first year teacher, told us one day he could barely handle the "daily grind" of teaching, and just wanted to go back to school. Sure enough, he quit at the end of the year, and I saw him on campus at UWEC 5 years later...I guess he was making it a career.

As for the Whitewater guy, he is now famous, if he left, he's the idiot who went to school forever. It'd be tough to leave with that on your resume.
