Domain name registration question

gypcasino
I want to set up a website with a .com name. It's a name nobody else would ever use so it's available & cheap. What is the best way to go about registering it? I can buy it at godaddy for $8.95 a year. Should I do that?

Yeah, search for the best deal on the actual domain registration. It really doesn't matter who registers it for you, everyone is providing virtually the same service for that. What matters is who will be the authorative domain server going forward and who will host the website.

If you are looking for pure simplicity and price, I would recommend yahoo.com and 1and1.com -- both huge hosts. Both can expand to suit your needs.

If you need more code support, first identify what technology you may be using and then search for the hosts that have those pre-installed. Hostrocket.com has been good.

One additional note to anyone out there looking to register domains -- avoid register.com like the plague. I've worked with dozens of registrars and for such a large company they are terribly unreliable.

If you do go that way, here's a website with some godaddy codes that should take a few cents/dollars off the final price.

Thanks for that.

So basically, if you request a domain name and it's not in use nor is someone "squatting" on it, you're just paying a company to register it with whatever orginization oversees domains right? And when you say "huge hosts" are you talking about the amount of bandwidth I can use? If it's going to be mostly text with a few pictures, I don't have to worry about paying for bandwidth and whatnot? Does my 9 bucks a year pretty much cover everything?

The web page itself is going to be a piece of cake. It's just these other things that up until now I've never dealt with.

I've used GoDaddy with success. Your $9 pretty much covers it all. They'll ask you if you want secret listing and try to scare you into thinking your identitiy will be stolen, etc. and then charge you money to be listed confidentially. I fell for it the first time and now am stuck with it forever, paying $20 a year instead of $9.
