Exchange Server Question

TheCrew07

Has anyone hear setup and supported exchange server for a small business?

I work for a very large corporation and all of our domain/email/web hosting is done corporately. Mostly I do desktop/networking/hardware support and integrations. However, I've gotten roped into a very good friend's mortage business, I just setup small business server for him, and I'd like to host his email on the SBS instead of through his ISP. If anyone has setup this is up and can point me to some how to type guides I would really appreciate it.

I looked on Amazon and I couldn't find a book that was exactly in the mold of where my questions are. Like do I need to publish a public IP on the other side of the router and those sorts of setup type questions. Configuring Exchange server really isn't my concern, more the connection between the server and the ISP.

Do you know what kind of router/firewall they have, and how many IPs they have available? You'll probably need to add a secondary IP to the public side, and set up a 1:1 NAT mapping to the server's IP - this will ensure that mail comes in and goes out on the same IP (some spam filters are picky about this). Technically, the server only needs to have port 25 reachable from the outside to receive mail, though you may need 80 or 443 as well if you want to use OWA or RPC over HTTPProxy for remote access to email. If you use an external spam filtering service, you will want to lock port 25 down to their IP range only.

This site has a lot of good howtos on exchange-related things, and usually include which ports you need open on your firewall.
