Stanford Squatter

gypcasino

This is some pretty interesting reading.

I find this story really fascinating, wondering what would make somebody go to such great lengths to do such a thing-

High school graduate pretends to be a Stanford student, even living in the dorms, buying textbooks and ?studying? for exams

Here's a follow up article-

Dormmates, high school peers of squatter student wonder how, why

And there's another woman who's been hanging around one of the physics labs at Stanford for four years with "no real reason to be there."

Imposter II? Four years in Varian

I've thought of sitting in on a few interesting classes before, because really - in a large lecture, who would ever notice?

I never went past the thought stage though. This story is an extreme case of that I guess.

I guess I'm not all that sure how this could happen at Stanford. I went to a school just down the road from there (Santa Clara University), and all of my teachers knew my name before the first day of class and took attendance. I never had more than 35 people in a class, except Stats and Chem.

All this paints Stanford in a fairly pathetic light, and rightfully so. I don't even think that the Director of Residential Life at my college could find and exploit enough loopholes to pull something like that off.

I did it at Eau Claire once. My friend and I both had class and mine was canceled, so I went with him to a huge lecture hall class and he knew there'd be no test or attendance taken. Honestly, I can't see that but being anything but a big ego boost to a professor even if you're ever caught, though.

Oh come on guys, we all know that nobody thinks bad of a Stanford squatter..

Anyways, I've sat in on a class at a friend's college while visiting and had nothing to do during the day. It was a big enough lecture that I was unnoticed - just did a crossword and pretended to care.
