"It's only dog fighting"

danzig6767

Dog fighting is a disgusting thing and it should be very strictly enforced.

Pit Bulls, by breed, are NOT violent animals. It's a huge misconception about them. They've been demonized into this role by sensationalist media, gullible public and the people who raise them and train them to fight.

Pit Bulls are breed to fight because of their physical characteristics. They have a low center of gravity, big heads with strong jaws and strong bodies. They are an ideal dog for fighting purposes. They can be trained to attack animals, especially dogs, and leave humans and such alone.

They are trained with some terrible techniques that involve torturing of them and other animals. Other animals, including weak dogs are used as bait for them. This fact is of course forgotten when it comes to the training of these dogs.

These dogs are taught the world is a place of fear and live terribly abusive lives. Their emotions are damaged so badly they only want to fight. So the breeders are trainers argue that the dogs want to fight, etc. But this untrue. The dogs are raised in a world of fighting and are warped into this mind set.

Pit Bulls are friendly dogs if trained to be so, like any others. I don't have any or want any (they're ugly) but it's too bad for the people who love that breed (and similar ones that fall under the Pit Bull umbrella) have restrictions on them because of stupid breeders, trainers and owners.

@#%$ fighting, c0ck fighting, c0ckfighting
I know I'm coming in a week after the fact, but since we have an education effort going on and the thread's still active...

On one hand, the items quoted violate site guidelines in regard to the word filter. On the other hand, we have the filter getting in the way of legitimate discussion. I guess that's a bridge we have to cross occasionally.

The solution to this particular situation is easy, though. The filter accepts 'cockfighting' just fine as a closed compound. (A Google search indicates that both spellings are widely used; reference.com prefers the closed compound.)

I'll go back and edit those posts.

--------------------

EDIT: In the case where the filtered word needed to be used by itself, 'rooster' worked just fine as a synonym.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I take it many of you who have commented on this topic in regard to animal slaughter don't eat meat?

And to comment on the topic of this thread, it seems like the one guy in the video (not Portis) either can't believe what Portis is saying, or he's giggling because he knows Portis takes part (and perhaps himself as well).

Dog fighting is disgusting. It is done for money and power and in some cases involves drug rings as well.

You go into a home that has housed dog fights and you'll see videos of dog fights, dogs in the backyard, the pens where the dogs fight etc.

Not only does this effect dogs but also other animals when dogs are being trained. Cats, rabbits, other small dogs etc. are used to train the dogs to kill.

When a fighting house is taken over police often go along due to drugs and weapons also being at the house due to the thousands of dollars that are usually bet on in fights. The surviving dogs are taken to a shelter where they are treated but nearly all of them are euthanized due to the way they were trained and how they can't be adopted out to homes without the safety of the new owners being at risk.

I eat meat....in fact, sometimes I eat non free range meat from mass produced meat plants. Last night I made a delicious chicken dish with artichoke hearts, tomatoes, and sun dried tomato pesto. I just find the hypocrisy on this topic sort of interesting. Read the book Fast Food Nation and see how wonderfully these animals have it before they are killed.

I wonder if these were pigs being trained to fight if there would be the outrage.

I am not sure that I see the hypocrisy -- I don't think anyone condones the fast food industry being less than humane.

Once you get past the idea that some animals are going to be raised to be consumed, I think you can make a distinction between raising animals for consumption and allowing dogs to maim each other in an ongoing manner.

To continue my devil's advocate role in this thread, by animal consumption do you mean any sort of way an animal is used by consumers? I.e. leather products, furs, etc.? I can see there being different 'levels' of animal cruelty. I mean putting perfume in a cat's eye to see how it reacts to me is not much different from dog's fighting. But I can buy the argument that animals raised for food at least provide a benefit to man kind.

The animals at meat factories are raised with efficiency in mind. The idea is to raise as tasty of an animal as possible for as cheaply as possible so the most people possible can eat it. It's not very humane, and I don't agree with it, but it's reasonable. It's reasonable because this meat feeds millions of people.

Dog fighting involves warping a dogs mind, making it borderline insane with the intent to fight it against other dogs for entertainment and profit. The animals are abused mentally and physically for no utilitarian reason. In addition, the dogs become a potential threat to society.

I'm just not sure you can seriously compare the meat packing industry to the dog fighting industry. I'd agree, neither treats animals very well. But at least one has a legit purpose with the intent to feed millions of people.

I suppose I do -- however, the fur industry for example, has changed a lot over the years, in making fur coats. Animal testing has rigid standards, and people that look over them. The dog-fighting industry does not have any sort of gov't regulations or some sort of self-regulation that ensures humane treatment.

To me, corporate animal farming and dog fighting are nearly on the same level of torture to animals. People just don't care about the corporate farming because they're so far removed from it.

However, there's a big difference between free-range animals who are given a (short, but) dignified life before they go to "animal heaven". Animals raised to fight are tortured to make them mean.
