Interesting story

paul253

I just read this article on yahoo

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070...on_decorum

I am kind of in the middle on this. One the one hand, it seems a bit harsh to not give someone a diploma for something their friends/family did. On the other hand, Im sure this has occurred at just about everyone's graduation and I personally find it extremely obnoxious. 90% of the parents can follow the orders, but its those 10% that are hootin' and hollerin' (or as they say in the movie "Maverick"..."whoopin' around like a bunch of idiots") and bothering everyone else. I always feel sorry for the family after the person whose cheering section acts up because they cant hear their child's name being called. In this case they signed contracts, so you cant really fault the school for taking action I guess. Sometimes you just get the feeling some people think they are above the rules and when they get called on there actions they act surprised and offended.

Gayles' mother said she plans to fight the school board ? in court if necessary ? to get her daughter's diploma. The noise "was like three seconds. It was like, `Yay,' and that was it," Carolyn Gayles said.

"'Yay' and that was it." Yep, I'm sure that was it. And the ACLU wasn't exactly eager to jump all over this one I see. But yeah, I can see both sides. Kind of hard to get excited either way unless you were there to see what actually occured.

I'm on the fence as far as the cheering issue goes. It's a time for celebration, but people need to show respect as well. However, I'm definitely not on the fence when it comes to reneging on a contract. The school can and absolutely should do what it said that would do. If the school 'let it slide', they would lose credibility and could serve to worsen the problem.
