Show Me Your Art

GAME05

Recommended Posts

I am terrible at art and ceramics and all that stuff. I used to play crayon hockey in elementary school art and most of my ceramics projects ended up in the Bark River on the walk home from school. I'm sure I have something that I couldn't find later to show you how terrible I am at drawing or painting or any other type of art.

very cool cribbage boards! i'm also of the type who can't draw a circle. but i can't afford to go out and i don't want to spend all my time staring at a computer, so i've started doing some artsy-crafty projects. i needed to find a hobby, so this was how i managed to avoid a second job as a freelance writer:) i've taken to silhouetting/stenciling because i don't have to create the original image, but just completely bastardize it to make it my own. i couldn't draw to save my life. these are my third and fourth pieces. i don't pretend i'm anything special at all, but don't much care because it's just fun to do.

btw, if anyone wants, GIMP is a good PhotoShop-type freeware. and i use PosteRazor a lot (also freeware) to expand/contract images and to print out large pieces using only a regular home printer.

edit: GIMP works fine, but i kinda feel like spending the $90 to get PhotoShop and learning on that partly just for the sake of learning how to use the most popular program.

this is my first attempt at a two-layer stencil. the layers are hard to line up, so i have some white showing. hopefully practice will fix that. i'm wondering if maybe next time instead of spray paint i'll try out something like charcoal. that way i can fill in the gaps and even maybe use some shading.

I can't draw a circle.

My son was thought to have intelligence issues when he was 3-4 because when he colored, he never stayed in the lines. Turns out, he didn't understand the point, nor did he care when told.

Same thing happened to my brother and I for screening at that age. For example my mom said they asked me to cut out a circle and handed me a piece of paper with a circle drawn on it. I cut one, but it was really small and didn't follow the lines so they gave me bad marks. Years later when my brother went through the same tests he did most of the same things, but she knew to tell them that he had done exactly what they asked, just in his own way.

Anyway, my roommates sister is an amazing artist. I will ask him to send me some pictures to post here. She draws a lot of animals native to WI.

I built this one from the frame up. I did everything other than the pinstriping and the powdercoating right here in the garage.

I'm enjoying my new Silhouette Cameo. I've actually had it for two years but this is the first I've been able to use it. It's a stencil cutter, basically a printer that uses a razor blade. Today I took a photo of my baby niece and did a glass etching of her. Tomorrow I'm going to get a shadow box and print out some John Coltrane sheet music, and I cut out pictures of Calvin and Hobbes dancing (w/ the Silhouette) that I'll make pop out with double-sided tape and small pieces of foam.

If you have other ideas on what to use for the backing of the glass etching I'd be all ears. I tried white and that doesn't work. I'm currently just using black construction paper which kind of mirrors the whole thing.
