New Years Eve Thread

Bikeage77
Oh man Hawning...we had a pretty good new years...but I was trying to come up with other stuff to do since the past two years we've ended up at the same house. While it's fun, I thought maybe there was some different options of stuff to do...this thread did not help much.

Don't feel bad, Bike. . . I never turn down an opportunity to publicly wallow in my own lameness. I love to play "woe is me", whether I have a platter woe or not.

This thread has certainly turned into a lame-off, and I can't reverse course on it much. We actually didn't have plans, but got an unexpected free night, as Grandpa offered to keep the boys an extra night by his place. We got an early dinner downtown and caught a movie, had a drink together at midnight at home. It was a good night by our standards!

Pre-kids we did the fancypants dinner at Alinea in Chicago with two of our good friends for a few years. We can't really justify the cost since the boys though and haven't done that in 3 years now, but it is sorely missed by us both each year.

New Year's Eve is also the mother-in-law's birthday. The last three years, the wife and I have gone to her parents' house. The grandparents are usually there. This year, we hauled the kids over, chased the oldest around all night, ate some food, fell asleep at 10 with our oldest in my lap, got woken up at 11:45 to drink a glass of bad-tasting champagne and eat some bad-tasting cake. I was in bed by 12:20.

I stayed up until 5am playing a board game called "Things". Basically, you sit around and answer questions like "Things you shouldn't do at work" or "Things you would never say to your mother" and then you try and guess who said what. It gets better the more white russians you consume.

Oh pretendastronaut, I'm jealous. I'd love to eat at Alinea - much less for New Years. I imagine that cost a pretty penny, but what an experience. That's the sort of thing we try to find here in Milwaukee, but nothing comes close to what Alinea is doing.

I'm retroactively, gastronomically jealous.

Jebus, this thread is depressing. I went to a classy lounge on the north side of Chicago with my girlfriend and all her friends. A couple of my buddies tagged along as well. $50 for unlimited Grey Goose and other top shelf liquors...from what I remember I had a great time.

I just saw some pictures of NYE and I can honestly say that nothing "lame" happened at our party. Ouch, my eyes were red, glassy and only a squint already by 10:00 pm. I don't drink copious amounts very often so I'm guessing that is why it happened so early. IT WAS A FREAKING BLAST!!

We played "Things" on X-mas and it's definitely a lot of fun after a few cocktails.

That game led to one of the most awkward experiences I've ever had. I played it in a group that included a then current girlfriend and a then ex girlfriend. The then ex girlfriend and I got like 90% of the stuff the other said, which didn't sit well with the current girlfriend. And of course the booze didn't help things.

Sounds like I need to check that game out! We have people over for game night here and there and usually play Loaded Questions. We just turn everything into inappropriate topics. Which sounds like something similar.

I'm a competitive person but I can't help but play "Things" just for the laughs. Everyone knows exactly what I wrote but I don't care as long as it's funny.

The cost is surely prohibitive, especially if you do the wine pairings, and it was higher for NYE as well, but it has always been worth it, because like you said, it's as much about the experience as the food itself. The first time I went there was probably still the best because I so anticipated it, I literally was giggling after the first few courses.

There is good food in Milwaukee, but certainly nothing approaching the level of Alinea.
