Brewers hire Joe Block as new radio play-by-play announcer (Latest: Jeff Levering joins radio broadcast team for 2015)

What's our take on block these days? Thought I'd bring this thread up with the signing of the new radio guy taking over for Ueck on road games he doesn't travel to.

I enjoyed Block. I enjoyed him a LOT more when he was paired with Hamilton (or someone else) in the booth. I'm sure it's tough for a guy to be the lone-man in the booth so often when I doubt he'd done that very much before. There's a reason almost no-one does it these days.

Still can't stand listening to any sport on the radio. As for those being discussed, Block is ok because he actually talks about the game that is going on in front of him unlike Uecker who seems to only be interested in telling stories. Pairing Hamilton with Block at least gave some life to the broadcast instead it sounding like a robot reading play by play.

I really liked Hamilton and Block as a team, but understand that Hamilton is going to leave a year long network gig to do brewers radio full time. I think Block has gotten better as time goes on, and don't mind him anymore.

The new guys background sounds very similar to Block's.

The issue I have is that the days of having a brewer in the broadcast booth will be over once Uecker hangs it up for good. You have a dodger and a red sox guy.

Whats enduring about Schroeder and Uecker is that they have been in Milwaukee forever and know the history of the team. They have been through the ups and downs and can put current events in prospective. This is important. Block is learning and the new guy known nothing.

I wish the team could have found someone from the past instead of finding a guy from Boston.

Would Hamilton come back once Uecker is done? Did he ever talk about doing radio long term? I guess I've never heard anything nor have I ever heard any speculation.

I doubt it. I am sure he is making more money working full time at a yearlong network gig, rather than 7 months doing brewers AM radio.

A whole heck of a lot less traveling too at MLB Network.

Finally seeing the story in the J-S NewsWatch blog, I thought it was an odd coincidence this thread had started going again.

Somewhat surprised they don't just give him pre- or post- game responsibilities, since that could be accomplished in the studio (without the travel), and divide the labor a bit more with Ueck and Block.

In any event, best wishes to Mr. Levering, who I suspect will find out about this site in the next few months.

I am on the other side of the coin. I would rather listen to most sports than watch it. I like being able to move around and do things while listening to the game rather than be stuck to the sofa watching it. I agree however that Uecher sometimes gets carried away with stories and neglects telling us the fly ball was foul or fair and such. But the flip side is when the game is dull he isn't. In some of those bad years I liked it more when the game was out of hand because Bob would go night at the improv on the broadcast. Now that the team is competitive I would rather hear the game called better. But an 80 year old icon can do as he wishes and I will not complain.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I too prefer listening on the radio. Probably because the majority of games were not televised when I was younger. Nothing like sitting outside on a warm summer night, listening to the Brewer game.
