User Driven Power 50 (Dec 2011) - Results in! See Post #31

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Ok, not sure what I'm signing myself up to exactly... but I'll give it a whirl to compile the list.

But a few ground rules:

1) Please list your players 1 to X (stop at 50 or 30 or 1 if you like) with no commentary.  I plan on cut-n-paste into Excel to do this, so less work is appreciated! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

2) Only submit one list.  If you update please update your original list.

3) Please list one player per line.

4) Submissions will close in two weeks-ish.  So around January 10th or so.  Work/family/etc may "tweak" that date.

Results will be pretty simple.  First place vote gets 50 points, 2nd, 49, etc...

If the mods have any suggestions to make this easier, I'm all ears. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

After Mondesi I just ranked this year's draft picks in the order that I liked them, hard to form an opinion on most of those guys, especially the ones who didn't play, I just don't have enough knowledge of the players prior to the draft to form any sort of opinion I'd be willing to back up. I'd throw Ortega in there someplace and remove one of the older fringe players who project as a backup if I really thought about where he should place, I'm intrigued by him statistically without knowing much about his stuff. Carlos Sosa is another player who's statistically intriguing, though he was only used in relief through both his stints in the DSL, but he could jump to Helena for 2012.

I am leaving off Shafer, Green, and Fiers as I believe they will be in the Bigs for most of 2012. Rogers and Rivas because of there age and/or injury history aren't prospects just AAAA players.

Love this line from the fangraphs prospect list linked above, in their summary about OF Caleb Gindl:

"Gindl will likely top out as a No. 4 starter"

Hulet has been writing there a long time... I'm not sure why he's putting any stock in Bradley's AFL work, that's a hitter's league, there's a reason the Brewers wanted out of High Desert. Bradley gave up 2 HRs in 8 innings, of course his ERA is going to look bad.

According to the comments, by Jim Breen in particular, he's spoken to Bradley and he was informed he's starting in the FSL next season. That seems awfully aggressive to me but I guess there is a legitimate chance that Jungmann starts that high as well. I hope they know what they are doing because I'm still significantly bothered by Jungmann's lack of wow factor when I watched him pitch. I just don't get excited about any player that doesn't stand out in one way or another. I'd rather not have both guys go down to Florida and put up ERAs in the 4s or worse as they work on stuff. At the very least I would have liked to see both guys pitch in WI once in person to form a better opinion of each... oh well. We'll see how it turns out.

Only Hultzen that I could see who is a top prospect did really well or that I can remember. Gerrit Cole the #1 pick didn't do as well either in the AFL they had almost identical stats. I am not sure how anyone could judge any player based on their stats in the AFL since it is a rather short season. Plus it was only 8.1 innings for Bradley I do not see how you can come up with any kind of a conclusion about a player by looking at only 8.1 innings of work. If this were more based on how he was throwing (velocity, movement, mechanics, etc.) then I could get behind basing something off of something so small for Bradley.

It is interesting to see everyone putting D'Vo so high. I love D'Vo but he really hasn't shown all that much in the minors. I love his athleticism and he is really the only 5-tool player in the Brewers farm system right now but I am not sure he should be ranked that high but that maybe because of the lack of talent the Brewers have in the minors more so than anything else.

For me, you summed up why d'vo was in the top20 with your last sentence. Guys like reed or even ke. Davis could roar past him with impressive seasons, but for right now imo d,vo has the best combo of athleticism/upside and development/production for of prospects not named schafer or gindl.

Mine might seem a little crazy to some, but its how I feel. One player I am sure to have higher than anyone else is there because I have seen him a few times now and every single game he has been the most impressive player on the field both offensively and defensively.

I really like Nick Ramirez as a power hitter at 1B and he looks to be the only guy in the Brewers minors that looks to have at least plus power in his bat. Also Gennett is probably the most polished hitter in the Brewers farm that is why I have him ranked so high as he has a higher ceiling than most of the players in the Brewers farm system besides D'Vo. With Gennett there is obviously the size and his defensive issues. Gennett isn't a top rated prospect and I wouldn't put him in the top 100 prospects in the minors but he is a solid prospect who if he can field better at 2B will probably be an annual all star at 2B as his bat is a plus at second. The one thing I am concerned about with D'Vo is that he maybe another Carlos Gomez like player. I believe D'Vo will turn into an elite defensive CF but he maybe as bad as Gomez at the plate and with his base running. There are really only a few prospects the Brewers have who would rate above a C rated prospect. Gennett, Peralta, Manzanillo, and Green are the ones that would rate above a C grade. All of the recent draft picks and DSL players are not included in this rating as they really haven't done much if anything in the minors yet.

The Brewers farm system maybe down in terms of top talent but there is a lot of roster filler players. Schafer and Gindl are players who will have an impact on the team just that they won't be All Star type players. I can see Schafer and Gindl playing key roles as platoon players. The one thing the Brewers have a decent depth of are #4 and #5 pitchers. The most polished #5 pitcher is Fiers as I can see him being either a long reliever or a #5 pitcher. I believe Fiers is really a bottom of the rotation starter and he will be able rather successful I wouldn't be surprised if he put up an ERA around 3.6-4.00 in his rookie year as a starter. I believe Josh Collmenter of the Diamondbacks is very comparable to Fiers. Collmenter's 2011 stats: 3.38 ERA, 3.80 FIP, 1.07 WHIP. The Brewers really do have some strong #4 and 5 starters in the minors which is a very good thing as having these pitchers will have a better impact on the teams budget (no more Suppan or Looper like signings hopefully).

that's interesting Nate, because I consider Gamel (not a prospect technically anymore), Green, and Gindl to be more polished than Gennett.

I think I might be overvaluing Scarpetta and Rogers a bit, but they've both been fun (and frustrating) to follow the past few seasons
