Prince Fielder signs with...

It's extremely unlikely but it's not impossible.

Not to mention that it would probably make the team worse, overall

EDIT: Hah, just read prophet's thread in the ML forum about attending an event in which Rick Schlesinger was the featured speaker:

"Lastly, one guy asked about signing Fielder, and Rick was honest and said it's not going to happen. With the payroll the way it is right now, many moves would have to be made to do it, and they feel that all the necessary scenarios would only weaken the team. He said that it is Gamels job to lose, and they are confident in him. The same guy pressed the issue a little bit (same guy who said they should trade Braun) and Rick had a funny line. He said the odds of signing Fielder would be about the same as getting struck by lightening three times, while getting mauled by a family of polar bears, with the winning powerball ticket in your back pocket."

A dude on NSBB passed along a rumor that TEX is working on a 6 year deal with Prince; however there is an out clause after 3 years. So it would essentially be a 3 year deal unless he tanks.

No idea about the validity; just thought I would pass it along.

I did hear a similar rumor, but it was before the Rangers signed Darvish. So it may be old news that isn't as valid anymore.

The reality is that key members of the Rangers' front office had a strong idea for the last month they would sign their future ace. It was just a matter of how much it would cost.

The Texas-sized truth is that while the Rangers now have Darvish, they still want Fielder, too.

But they also know publicly divulging their intentions will drive up Fielder's price tag and spoil their surprise attack.

This is from after the Darvish signing.

Can Hamilton play 1st base? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
This may not be as far fetched as it seems, considering the fact that his babysitter in Texas is now employed by the Brewers.
Roco I really like your posts but Calling Narron Hamilton's babysitter is a unwarranted and distasteful comment. Hamilton has had serious issues in his past and one time recently they popped back up. He has no real routine in his life, some many recovering addicts say helps immensely, so he is smart enough to have someone near him to help him make good decisions. And you belittle that? Seems out of line.

Sure, the Brewers could shed payroll to add Prince, it would probably cost them 2 of 3 of Wolf, K-Rod, and Hart, which would make them worse overall.

And that is just if Prince comes on a one year deal. Sign Prince going forward and you also lose any chance at locking up Greinke and anyone else.

I have a hard time believing if we lose K-Rod and Wolf and gain Fielder that we would be worse. I think Wolf did it with mirrors last year and the Brew could have Veras pitch the 8th or find an 8th inning guy. Relievers/closers prices have come way down.

IMO if we somehow get Fielder back and don't have to drop 3 or 4 guys I think we would be the favorite in the NL.

With that being said i dont think Fielder would come back on a 1 year deal.

Sorry, I can see how the comment was snide. His handler/mentor/sponsor then.

Wolf has been pretty good overall since the second half of 2008, especially for a 4th starter. He's always given up baserunners but can usually work his way out of it. Sure it might catch up to him eventually but I would rather have him than our other options, at least for this year. As for Veras vs. KRod, I'd still take KRod. If you think Veras is so good he could pitch the 8th, wouldn't you rather have a shut-down 7th/8th/9th than just 8th/9th?

No problem. Mentor is a very accurate word usage. I listened to a whole radio segment here in Minnesota where the guys mocked Hamilton for needing someone around him to help stay clean and it really annoyed me. You are a really good poster so I doubted it was your intent to bash Hamilton

The guy that posted that has no credibility at all. Just read through his twitter feed. He falsely reports things all the time. Basically he just tries to jump the gun on things, hoping they end up being true so he can take credit for breaking the story. He reported a week ago that Braun was suspended, which was before he even had his hearing. The guy is stupid. This will probably happen eventually, but not right now. Boras will take his time, and try to squeeze every penny out of them.

I agree with everything you wrote. It's no disrespect to Wolf to say it's far more feasible that say a Peralta or Estrada could match his numbers than Gamel could match Fielders and as good as K-Rod was in a Brewer uniform his overall numbers, 2.64 ERA, 1.298 WHIP get matched by young power arms that seemingly come out of nowhere every season. I know fans don't like to face it, but Fielder is on a HOF career track. I don't think Gamel is.

That being said, even if Fielder were interested in a one year deal, Melvin doesn't seem inclined to want to bother having to move guys.

You make a very good point about Fielder and Gamel. The defensive upgrade will be good but I don't think it will be near enough to make up for the offensive decline. Fielding is an elite hitter and Game is still, at best, a promising prospect whose ceiling isn't even close to Fielder.

Wolf has been good but he's going to decline sometime, very possibly this year, and could much more easily be replaced than Prince. And while K-Rods don't grow on trees, they come around pretty often and randomly and are much, much cheaper.
