Prince Fielder signs with...

Gamel doesn't have to be Fielder offensively to be extremely valuable, the 1 to 1 comparisons need to stop. If our expectation is to replace a HOF talent with another HOF talent, then our expectations are unrealistic and need to be adjusted downward.

I agree but some people seem to think that with the improved defense Gamel will be adequate in replacing Prince. I don't think he will even come close.

I don't think people are saying that. What they are saying is ARam + Gonzalez + Gamel is pretty close to McGehee + Yuni + Prince.

Exactly. I dont remember reading anyone saying Gamel to Fielder is anywhere near a wash. It all has to do with the idea that with how bad Casey and Yuni were last year there is a good shot even with Gamel at first our team is as good overall as last year (pending the Braun situation).

I agree with the fact that Prince/Yuni/McGehee and Gamel/Gonzo/Ramirez is pretty close to a wash, but I think everyone just naturally seems to assume that because Prince was not a good defender, Gamel will be a nice upgrade defensively -- and that's something that we really don't know yet.

That's why we speculate.

When a guy who plays 3rd has great range, but is terrible at making throws, it's at least not a huge leap to suggest he can and will be able to handle 1st base better than Prince. The fact that he's also much bigger and more athletic,ie, able to make up for some more errant throws, and that Prince was terrible at picking balls at 1st, I don't think it's a stretch to speculate that he's going to be a defensive upgrade.

If you want to apply the, "well, we haven't actually seen it yet," or, "you never know," logic, you can argue in circles about everything, but common sense and watching Gamel should help come to what I think is a pretty safe conclusion.

Correct H.A.T. Gamel's issue on defense was normally when he fielded a routine grounder and then fired it wildly to 1st. I don't ever remember his fielding being the issue...maybe I'm wrong there though. I also agree from above as well. "Prince/Yuni/McGehee and Gamel/Gonzo/Ramirez is pretty close to a wash". While the team would have been better with Prince/Gonzo/Ramirez the team couldn't afford that...
