Ryan Theriot

Punto is light years better defensively and has tons of career starts all over the IF. I'll take him every day of the week and even 98 times out of 100 when his bat's not going well because his glove is THAT good.

I'd take Theriot any day. Punto is no better than average defensively at SS. Theriot had a bad year defensively for Cards last year, but he had years with Cubs with FP of .980, .975, and .974, those are all average or better. Furthermore, Punto has never been an everyday player at SS in the big leagues. Theriot has. With a 35 year old starter, I'd rather have a guy that has at least played there everyday.

Theriot loves hitting at Miller Park too. In 163 plate appearances, he's hit .340/.406/.444. On the other hand, Punto has never had an extra base hit in Miller Park.

Besides, Gonzalez value is purely defensive. He's worse than Bettancourt with the bat. Why have two weak bats at that position?

I'd take Theriot in a heartbeat solely for this reason. Not sure if I am serious because he is an awful defender.

However, every game he plays against us in Miller Park seems like he has a multiple hit game. Sort of reminds me of Aramis in that regard. 2 recent Cubs on our team seems like an interesting prospect. Maybe we can also see what Mike Fontenot is up to.

Punto has been an everyday shortstop. That the Twins chose to keep moving him around to fill other holes was not a reflection of his ability at SS.

I'd much rather have been watching the Brewers all these years, but I'm stuck watching the Twins and know more than I'd actually hope to about Punto's game.

Pretty high standards for a backup INF who can play SS. Theriot and Punto are the two best left on the market, and while neither is an all-star, utility guys usually have warts. I'd prefer Punto because he can play 2B/SS/3B, while Theriot is basically just a 2B/SS.

Of course, maybe the guy they get to platoon with Gamel will be able to play 3B (Casey Blake?), or maybe they'll keep 2 other reserve INF's and Mat's platoon partner will also be a LF/RF, like a Xavier Nady type.

The average SS had a .317 OBP last year, Theriot is .329 over the past three seasons. Limited pop, but he's by far the best backup SS on the market now. All the rest are just generic no hit types.

Come on Al, you've been around here for awhile now. If a player doesn't put up a .800 OPS, he's automatically terrible.

I think I'd rather see the Brewers wait out the ST decisions & potential waiver-wire acquisitions than have to pay Theriot for two seasons. He's probably the best utility IF guy left, but that's not really saying much.

Good point. We do need a veteran who can pinch hit and get on base...
