Luke Scott

Scott was non-tendered by the Orioles tonight. I think he would be a perfect target for the Brewers to fill in for Braun and provide some left handed power off the bench as well as Gamel insurance. He's coming off an injury, but seems to be the perfect candidate to fill the 'Kotsay role'.

We don't need another Kotsay role. Gindl or Schafer need to start getting MLB playing time, just like Gamel & Green on the IF.

It's nice to have prospects with some promise. But it becomes Twins Syndrome if you keep stacking 'em up but never giving them any meaningful extended chances to perform.

As ramssuperbowl99 outlined in his 2012 payroll thread, the spots the Brewers appear to have open are: 1) a SS backup, 2) another IF backup, & 3) an OF backup. Spot #1 will most likely be filled via free agency. Spot #2 seems like all but a lock for Taylor Green. Spot #3 could be filled by Logan Schafer, but Spot #3 is the last remaining place the Brewers will have on their roster for that corner player (meaning 1B/3B/LF/RF) who can be your power source off the bench as a pinch-hitter & sub.

While I'm in favor of Schafer being a part of the '12 team, I'll have to refine that & say that I want him to start off in Nashville & be the first OF up in case of injury or trade. I don't think the Brewers should risk not having a power bat on the bench again this season. It won't hurt Schafer at all (imo) to at least start 2012 by repeating AAA -- it'd only be his second season there.

Here's a quick & dirty list of some free agents that could fill that role. Some have been mentioned already, including Scott. I didn't include some possibilities since I assume they'd be too expensive (Cuddyer/Kubel, for example)

Russell Branyan
Brad Hawpe ($6M team option/$1M buyout for '12; I can't see the Pads exercising that option)
Johnny Damon (has had his power suppressed by two extreme pitchers parks the past two seasons)
Johnny Gomes
Scott Hairston
Wily Mo Peña
Luke Scott

Not exactly a long list, & really given the lack of good choices, I wouldn't mind Scott. Damon could fill in for many of the 50 games Braun could miss due to suspension & would be my first pick from those dudes -- the only question would be cost & whether or not he'd be interested in the Brewers.

The question is whether the 50 games to start the year where Scott would likely start in LF is enough to entice Scott. Coming off his injury plagued 2011, it might be. I don't see too many teams offering him more than a bench role.

Two guys twolivebrew didn't mention were Raul Ibanez and Pat Burrell. Ibanez likely has 50 games as a starter left in him and would make a nice bench bat the rest of the way.

My worry with Scott is RR makes him the everyday 1B. I think Scott is going to look for a place where he'll 400-500abs.

Bring back Branyan!!!!!

He'll be looking a long time then which means he'll still be out there when Braun's case is finished. If Braun gets suspended, he'd get at least 300 AB's with the Brewers and if he rakes in the first 50 while Gamel struggles, he'd have a legit shot at 500.

In other words, he'd have a chance to earn playing time based on what he does in April and May.

I'm all for bringing him in. Those calling him racist are only taking a surface look at him, judging him through a narrow world-view.

Without derailing this topic too much:

While I respect his opinion politically, I personally have zero interest about athletes giving their political opinions one way or the other unless they are running for political office. I cringe everytime I hear sports figures or celebrities speaking about politics and/or religion. Kanye West comes to mind from the other side of the spectrum when he spoke about Mr. Bush and Hurrican Katrina. Most times it comes off as offensive to one side. I, for one, just don't want to hear a player from my favorite team run his mouth all season about politics whether I agree with him or not.

Back on topic, I would love to add his stick to the lineup for sure because he would an excellent addition to our lineup. He doesn't seem like a bench player though. If I were him I would be looking for a full time gig and not just a 50 game LF starting job and then be a 4th OF.

I find it ironic that you call him racist for throwing banana chips, yet you call him a hillbilly. Since he is from Florida, that would generally mean you are using it as a slur based on his lifestyle. Hmmmm....

Looks like Adam Jones said it best:

"He's not a redneck racist; his beliefs are his beliefs," Jones says. "Their relationship is uncanny, and Pie ribs him just as much. I don't think Luke means any racist thing by it. Trust me, if I see racism, I'll say some s---. Quickly.

Luke Scott hit .220 last season with a .703 OPS at the age of 33. Other than the fact that he hits left-handed, you might as well keep Casey McGehee if you are going in that direction.

I see no reason why Caleb Gindl wouldn't be able to hit a .750 OPS at the very least while making $450,000

I really have concerns that someone who loves to shoot off with his mouth like that would make a decent teammate. I've worked with people like that before (the worst was a PETA member who'd scream at people that fishing or wearing leather was murder) , and publicly you may say they're "a character", but almost nobody likes them.

At this point, I think the character debate is pretty much moot as far as the Brewers are concerned. Apparently ten teams are interested in Scott. I can't imagine him not getting a two year deal in this market, and Melvin refuses to sign bench players to multi-year deals unless their name is Counsell.

I'd happily take Scott, but he'd only be guaranteed maybe 250 AB's so I doubt he'd come here. Those calling him racist might want to stop acting elitest. People have different views that are better discussed on the political forum. He's probably a good guy with some distorted views... Why throw around a serious accusation?

I hate athletes, entertainers, and other celebrities expressing their views in a negative light, but unfortunately it's a common thing these days.
