Even Don Money, who had plenty negative to say about Gamel (what a weird episode that was!), said Gamel did reasonably well at 1B.

He also said Gamel was as smart as a box of rocks, but I digress because I think Gamel is going to be a very good player.

While we're discussing WAR and who mean hows many wins etc... what is the WAR value of never having Mark Kotsay play CF and never having Loe pitch in the 8th inning? That has gotta be worth 1-3 wins right there, correct?

I am kind of baffled as to why people want Taylor Green instead of Aramis Ramirez (and for 140+ games no less) in a year where we have playoff hopes

Did you want to spend that money on Carlos Beltran or something?

I haven't read any of the thread but based on history I figure I'll be in the minority once again since I'm not raving about what a genius Melvin is.
Oh come on. Please. As usual, your analysis here is very smart, IMHO. But do you have to aggrandize yourself and broadly insult everybody else in this way?

For the life of me, I could never ever figure out why fans criticize how much money a ball club is paying someone. Is it your money?? NO! And to say it restricts them from resigning Greinke etc. Just save it. You have no idea what Atanassio has in mind for payroll etc. If it's your money then complain all you want, otherwise, I wish people would just shut their pie holes about how much their team spends on certain players.

But what about the 2014 season? Think of the 2014 season!!!

MLB Network and ESPN are taking the liberty of assuming McGehee is going to be playing 1B next year and ARam at 3B. No mention whatsoever of Mat Gamel.
I'm a big fan of this move as long as McGehee isn't playing 1B.

I agree with this completely.

It's because they know the club only has limited resources and they're spending a large amount on an aging, no-defense player.

I can't believe that even has to be stated.

If only we would play Green, Gamel, Peralta, Rivas, Shafer, Fiers, we would win at payroll

Sorry if some of us would rather find out what we have in Green and Gamel while they're cheap, have money to build a bullpen and a bench, and have flexibility to make a run at a Greinke extension.

I couldn't wait to see Green at 3B and Gamel at 1B next year.

I have to admit I was looking forward to seeing Green start at 3B. Seems like a long time since we broke in a rookie. One that we drafted and followed for a few years in the minors. Not just a guy we picked up off the scrap heap.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Sorry but I just don't get this desire to hate on every deal that is more than 2 years and $5M/per. Is this really going to take us out of the running for that 4th outfielder or LOOGY we have our eye on? Now our bench is in good shape with Green on the cheap. Also, Greinke got himself traded because he had that kind of infield every year.

.

Let's at least develop a hatred-softening nickname for him - remember how "Diego" helped some of us overcome the Jim Edmonds acquisition. We've got ample time to come up with something suitable.

Ive always referred to him as Igna. Short for Ignoramis. Its a stretch IgnoAramis.......

Signing Ramirez pushed us to trade Casey for what looks to be a quality reliever as well. I like this signing even more now. Looks like Taylor Green and Mat Gamel will play roles on this team next year. We dont have a back up at SS so that will have to get figured out

This is pretty off base. The dislike of the A-Ram contract at 3 years is mostly because of his age and durability.

Yeah, if A-Ram were 28 instead of 34 (or so), I don't think a single person would have a problem with a 3 year deal here.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I had my 'druthers I'd pick something that doesn't insult a Brewer (Diego, for example, only insulted the fan who failed at the Triple Play Trivia in 2010), but at the moment this is first on the list. Well, also last. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

If he was 28 he would have been looking for a 5 or 6 year deal.

And here is today's example of how not to foster productive discussion. I suggest you exercise a little more rhetorical ability in how you choose to express your disagreement.

I tend to agree. The division right this minute is muddled enough that Epstein will soon realize he can steal it and will go out and sign Fielder. I see the Brewers as no better than dark horses at this point. Ramirez might have moved them from 80 to 84 wins. Big deal. That's not going to make me run out and buy tickets.
C'mon Briggs, I know you love Fielder, but are you seriously valuing him at 16 wins? How do you justify that number?

I didn't know what that meant and had to look it up, good word. I assure you that wasn't my intent, I tend to get blasted for being a Melvin hater or playing with revisionist history when my opinions haven't changed much since 2007. The posts in this thread about winning the payroll war and why should it matter what Melvin pays someone because it's not our money make it pretty clear that many people still haven't taken the time or don't care to understand the other side of these arguments.
