Summer Shandy

logan82
So I heard today they are having a hard time keeping up with demand on Summer Shandy. I couldn't find any 12-packs and asked the owner of the liquor store if they had any. He said they couldn't keep up with demand and were going to cut back their distribution area. No more shipping it to the Twin Cities. Also going to start brewing it in Milwaukee.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Oh man, I bought a 12-pack of this stuff after hearing good things about it on this site! It was awful!

That was the first and last time I was disappointed with bf.net http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

agreed, that stuff is terrible. Put it with Berry Weiss. I might be able to drink 1 to start the night but that is it.

Most of Leine's beers are so good minus when they mix fruit with it, then all bets are off.

I thought the Berry Weiss was at least tolerable. They've made some pretty bad beers lately like the Sunset Wheat and now this Summer Shandy crap.

A single Berry Weiss was always fun to drink. Obviously getting plowed on them doesn't sound like a good idea.

But really, I like the taste of beer. I like to taste the hops. I'm not certain why one would want to alter the taste of it to make it sweet and fruity. That's why we have wine coolers and the other things like "Mike's Lemonade", etc. The bitterness and rich array of potential flavors of the barley, hops and grain are what I love about beer. My guess is the companies are trying to expand their market size to more than just beer drinking men.

By adding fruit and sweetening it, they can attract women to buy "beer". Not to mention the men that don't like beer but might actually like this stuff.

I don't blame them for trying, but for the most part, fruity beer is just not a good idea...

I'm gonig to have to disagree with you here, the Sunset Wheat is an excellent beer. I've never tried the summer Shandy beer, but when I was in Germany a lot of people drank beer with lemonade in it, which I thought was quite good as well.

The lemonade/beer concept isn't bad, but its better with a darker beer. Shandy tastes like lemon pledge mixed with Miller Lite.

If you like Sunset Wheat, I'd strongly suggest Island Wheat from Capitol Brewery (not sure how easy it is to get if you're outside WI).

Leinie's Red: Worst Beer Ever?

Not even close. Just off the top of my head, this beer comes to mind. Not horrible, but much worse than Lienies Red.

anything by Sam Adams is pretty awful.

The first beers I liked were Honeyweiss and Leinie's Red. My favorite beer by any company was Amber Light, so I'm pissed it is gone. I enjoy Sunset Wheat, but it's no Amber Light. Berryweiss is okay on occasion. It really tastes like Minute Maid Fruit Punch, only it's a beer. It's quite tasty, just not very manly.

Really, my rhetorical question was hyperbole. But, I don't mind this direction for the thread. You really should divide it by cost bracket, though, because for the most part you get what you pay for, as evidenced by this:

There was a topic on Shandy a few months back. I mentioned in that one how Leinie's had screwed up a great idea (lemon + weiss). Very, very disappointed. Although as others have mentioned, the ladies seem to like it.

I've now tried Sunset 4 times, including once on the Leinie's brewery tour. Although it's not terrible, it's not very good. My pick for worst ever:

Still remember getting loaded on that at a Halloween party back in '88. It narrowly beats out Smithwick's, which I had heard nothing but great thing's about...from Irish folk, no less. Should've known better.

So far, I haven't seen a picture of a "bad beer" yet. I'd drink every single one of those you guys posted pictures of. While we're at it, get me some Schlitz, I'd be all over that.

As long as it isn't made by Anhueser-Busch, I'll give it a go.

Well, let me drop my pants here. Yep, as big as ever.

I like the Sunset Wheat and the Shandy.

Oh well.

I like them as well, although I can't drink more than 1 or 2. I don't find them as grotesquely sweet as Berrywise, for whatever reason. I'll drink a Murphy's Irish Stout and follow it up with Sunset Wheat, so I guess I like everything.

Ouch. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Different strokes for different folks, I guess. The Boston is one of my favorite beers ever.

And FWIW, I don't like the summer shandy.
