According to the Times, Durant was the only prospect at camp who failed to bench press 185 pounds

look at the guy's arms...they are like little rails. and he is still young. remember how small devin harris was at the same age?

he is a scorer though....a proven scorer in a solid conference.

wonder what dominic james was ranked

Sit down before you read this. James was actually ranked #3.

LINK

Settle down. Keep in mind that these "rankings" were just of the measurable athleticism (Standing Vertical Jump, Max Vertical Jump, Bench Press, Lane Agility Drill, 3/4 Court Sprint) of each player, and is NOT a ranking of how the players will be chosen nor how they fared against one another in scrimmages.

Here's the top 10:

1. D.J. Strawberry - Maryland

2. Russell Carter - Notre Dame

3. Dominic James - Marquette

4. Mike Conley, Jr. - Ohio State

5. Carl Landry - Purdue

6. Dustin Salisbery - Temple

7. Thaddeus Young - Georgia Tech

8. Jason Smith - Colorado State

9. Ron Lewis - Ohio State

10. Rodney Stuckey - Eastern Washington

And where the players likely in the top 10 picks "rank":

Oden - #62

Durant - #78

B. Wright - #66

Horford - #21

Noah - #43

J. Wright - #66

Hawes - #72

Brewer - #29

Unfortunately for him they judge more on how you play basketball than how you measure in strength and athleticism. And James doesn't play basketball very well.

I'm sorry I couldn't resist.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

i never really said that James was going to be a good pro (heck i don't think he is all that great of a college player). Someone may take a flier on him next year due to his athletic ability, but he is a bad shooter and doesn't run the team that well.

I may be a mu grad but that doesn't mean i automatically feel hes a first round pick.

i wish football gms would draft football players more on their game performance than their athletic skills. All we ever seem to hear about football players is their 40 times and their combine scores. and for a while, all Sherman did was draft the fastest player without regard to any real football IQ or skills. I can still remember that Oklahoma QB from 2-3 years ago who won the Hiesman trophy and wasn't even drafted. And how low did OSU's QB Smith get drafted this year? WHY ? because he's slow and small. it's nice to know NBA Gms don't draft players based on athleticism.

problem is Reed is that if that Jason White could play someone would of found him. Tom Brady was drafted low and turned out well. Sherman was terrible for drafting workout warriors who didn't belong on a football field, but it always seems that with 30 teams in the nfl most good players gets found somehow.

Of course James was ranked high. Small, stocky PG's are always ranked high in these things. They can almost invariably lift a lot of weight because of their stature, they are generally quick and fast and only at this place because of their ability. Big guys don't have as much competition so you get a wider set of potential. There are a lot more good, small players than big ones.

Small guys are always "safer" bets in that they've gone through so much competition as there are so many more people who are 6' than 7' that the best of the best really rise to the top.

But, this doesn't mean James is a good basketball player compared to the best of the best. Against his contemporaries he's proven to be very average. This leads many scouts to believe that compared to NBA caliber PG's, he's rank as very poor.

Wow, unable to bench 185 is really bad for any pro athlete in a sport that's at all physical. I did that when I was 14, and was maybe one of 2 or 3 guys on my 8th grade team who was that strong.

Of course, this isn't gonna hurt Durant at all because there isn't a close #3 behind him and Oden for him to fall behind.

yeah, that isn't that much weight to lift. However, I'm usre its harder for someone like durant to lift that much because he has such long arms.

As a purdue alum, I'm glad to see landry did well. This might at least help him get drafted in the second round.

I think the bench pressing physical stats are more important for guys who play inside.

i would think they would have 40 /30 or some type of speed tests, and those would be important for guards.

i'd be interested is seeing what the exact tests give n were and how each player did in each test.

I included a link to the main table from DraftExpress.com in my post above.

While Durant seems on the thin side, I'm sure his long arms have something to do with it as well. I read somewhere that 5'5'' 135 lb Earl Boykins can bench 300+ lbs. An impressive feat, but he doesn't have to lift it all that far.
