I think JHJ is vastly overrated by some here. He doesn't have the arm for SS (imo), and is a so-so hitter for a 2B/3B type. Taylor Green can probably provide more value in that role. I think JHJ's a better defender than Green, but not by enough to justify keeping him ahead of Green's bat.

Despite his arm not being the greatest...who's going to back up SS when our starter (whoever it ends up being) needs a day off?

I don't think you can justify giving Counsell 2 yrs/5.6 million during his age 36 and 37 seasons and then balk at paying Hairston (a better offensive threat) slightly more money.

I wanted Furcal big time at the deadline, but I'm not sure that I want to sign him in this market. He's probably going to command 2 years for $12-15 million. At this point, it's looking like either Yuni/Gonzalez unless there is a trade. If it's me, I go with Yuni.

As for a backup, I wouldn't be surprised to see Counsell brought back the way things have shaken out. I'd prefer either Jack Wilson or maybe even Omar Vizquel for that role. Renteria is out there as well. Bottom line, I'm not giving any of these possible backup guys more than a year, but these sorts are getting multi-year deals so far.

Bill Hall as a replacement? Rosenthal tweeted tonight that he has lost 15 lbs to gain back some foot speed. Not a bad option for a minor league deal or a Kotsay-esque <1m deal.

Realistically he could still play 3b, 2b, Lf, Rf and MAYBE SS in a pinch. Heck he couldn't be worse than Yuni at SS.

who's going to back up SS... ?

You can trade for or sign any number of guys who can actually play SS to back up at SS. I think JHJ's arm precludes him from being a good SS defender... he barely had enough arm to make some of the more routine throws from 3B this season imo.

I'm not advocating for or against him (bc I know nothing of him), but just today MLBTR posted this about Robert Andino:
"Orioles infielder Robert Andino is drawing trade interest from teams who could use him as a starting shortstop, tweets MASN's Roch Kubatko."

And, since I went there to peruse their nicely-constructed list of SS options on the FA market... Cesar Izturis, Jack Wilson, Ronny Cedeno, Nick Punto. Then obviously there are the guys like Furcal & Alex Gonzalez who're viable SS starters available as FAs.

What I'd like to see the Brewers explore, personally, is to scour the league for shortstop candidates blocked in other organizations (a la MLBTR's mention of Andino). I'm fine with a Furcal or Gonzalez signing, but I hope the front office is willing to be more creative in case there's a better long-term fit available.

I'd give Bill Hall a NRI in a heartbeat, but it's doubtful to happen. There is probably a better chance that Felipe Lopez is brought to camp. The problem being that neither of these two has played much SS recently, likely due to the fact that they are not very capable there anymore.
