Another SS on the market

Alex Gonzalez wasn't offered arby by the Braves. He'll be 35 next spring. Had a great 2010 but his OBP is not good. Not sure on his range. I would think he'd be cheap. I would assume most would prefer Furcal to him. Thoughts?

His bat is about the same as Yuni's, but it looks like defensive metrics like him. But, like you said, he will be 35. I'd be underwhelmed, but at $1.5-2.0 million a year, I guess I'd rather have him than YuBet.

the Braves beat writers swear Gonzalez deserved a Gold Glove .....IMHO his range is average but he know's how to compensate by positioning himself; and he makes all the routine plays.... get him out of spacious Turner Field & I could see him hit .240 with 20-25 homers at Miller Park.... the cat has a World Series ring & would be a great presence in the clubhouse

Gonzalez is remarkably similar to Yuni at the plate. Hacker extraordinaire. Doesn't take walks. Unlike Yuni, he takes big swings and misses. Lots of strikeouts. The approach gives him a little more power. He's always been a plus fielder, but he'll be 35 next year, and you have to worry about this range. A one year deal for $2.5 million might be passable, if all other options are exhausted. But I'd like better.

 

I should note that I haven't seen him play much the past couple of years - so I can't tell you what I think of his defense other than what others say, and metrics say. A lot of people like him, but I don't know if that's more reputation than reality.

He looks like Yuni with a better glove, but pretty old and whiffs a ton. I'd keep him in the mix, but way down on the list.
