Green for Drabek Trade Idea

Part of me is thinking our plan B involves signing both Jimmy Rollins and Aramis Ramirez with the money that we offer Prince. I can especially see Ramirez coming here if Prince signs with the Cubs.

Toronto needs a 2b and Green is a Canadian that can play there. Which side do you think says no to a Green for Drabek swap?

You realize Drabek was traded for Halladay right? That's the kind of talent you're talking about here.

Green isn't even an above average 2B defensively...

You are either seriously underestimating Drabek's potential or seriously overestimating Green's potential. Or both.

I think that would be a fair deal. I think Toronto would turn it down but I don't think it's as clear cut as might seem. Green has progressed better through the minors while Drabek I guess has the better pedigree. Let me say I haven't ever seen Drabek pitch but his numbers in the minors look pretty underwhelming to me. Nothing about his numbers strikes me as 'top prospect'. I'd have a hard time moving Green for him if I'm the Brewers.

He does have a point though. A Narvy/Green/Thornburg may struugle to get the trade done. A straight up deal for a top of the line prospect/2nd year pitcher for a out of position (2nd Base) whose ceiling is an average/servicable 3B. Drabek still has star potential, Green has McGehee type potential which isn't bad but is not going to net a possible future Ace who I think is only 23 or 24? Green may hit .300 15-20HR's and drive in 80 or so runs during a career type year but most likely will be .280 with 15 HR 60 RBI's type of player with a high .700 maybe OPS(.780+)

There's no way they can afford both Rollins and Ramirez. Fielder's money from last year is already mostly used up in player raises. They need Green and Gamel simply because they need some cheap players to be able to afford a shortstop and some relievers.

Bingo.

The team is currently has about $72-73 million in obligations - that's including offering arby to Gomez, McGehee, Morgan, Parra and Marcum.

That leaves us around $15 million or so. Maybe $20 million, especially if you cut loose McGehee. Maybe others think our spending will go up, but I'll be surprised if it goes over $90 million. I'm more inclined they'll have it around $85 million, and then make a move mid-season to take on salary if they think it will work - like what they did with K-Rod.

You still need a SS, a back up infielder, a 1B, and probably at least one reliever.

If you go with Green and Gamel at 3B and 1B, and add only one decent veteran reliever, and a cheap back up infielder - you might only spend $5 million on that group. That leaves $10 million or so to spend on a SS. Does that get Rollins? Doubt it. But maybe you could stretch it and trim some other salary (McGehee) to get him. Furcal at $7-8 million is probably more in our range - especially if we want to add a second reliever, or spend a little more on a back up infielder.

I think the team will roll the dice with Green and Gamel because, financially, they have little choice. Unless they want to dump someone else (Wolf, Marcum, etc.), you just don't have the money. I'd use what we have to add a couple of decent relievers, a good back up infielder (I'd love Hairston) and a decent shortstop (Furcal, perhaps).
