Barmes, 2-3 year offer

As much as I'm not overly thrilled with Barmes compared to the Cadillac options out there, it does boost my opinion of him if Melvin & Co. feel he's the best choice for the Brewers to go after.

Can you help w/ any of the Twitter links you're seeing this on?

Didn't this twitter account try to predict stuff last year and fail horribly? BigRygg calls in to WSSP or did quite regularly, don't think he has any special connection that would make him know who the Brewers are talking to or if they're prepared to offer a contract to somebody.

Plus it is way to early in the offseason for a player like Barmes to be receiving offers. I doubt there was an official offer made by the Brewers to Barmes. This is more like a move that would be made after the winter meetings.

Why? Mark Ellis and Jamey Carroll have already signed. Most of the names I've heard in transaction talk this week haven't been stars. I would expect Reyes and Rollins to drag out, but not Barmes.

Here's hoping it's two years and not three. Defensively I'm sure he'll be fine, but he's worse than Yuni offensively.

I'd probably prefer two years, but could understand if they went three. Any possible in-house replacements at SS are in the low minors, so we may need someone for three years. However, Barmes will be 33 in March, so he's likely to continue to decline over the contract. Two years with a team option for a third year would probably be best.

I can't agree that he's worse offensively than Yuni. He's got a career line of .252/.302/.401/.703. In 2011 he hit .244/.312/.386/.698. Yuni's career line is .268/.292/.391/.683 for his career and .252/.271/..381/.652 in 2011. Yuni gets a few more hits, but Barmes walks more. Other than that, they're similar offensively, but Barmes plays better defense.

Barmes is far from perfect, but he should be a significant upgrade from last year and would be a good fix for our biggest hole this offseason. Get this done quick and then Melvin can focus on the bullpen.

From some recent Melvin comments, I don't think we have too much money to throw around. I don't know what Attanasio's Fielder talk was about. I think it's pretty much a given Gamel's our 1B and Green should be our 3B, maybe with someone like Hairston getting some starts. We'll sign someone like Barmes or Furcal and focus the rest of our cash on the bullpen.

No it's not. The market develops when the market develops. The market for non-star middle IFs seems to be right now.

Seems like a Pittsburgh type signing. If it's only a two year deal and the Brewers get outbid by Pittsburgh, I have to wonder what they are holding back money for. I snickered when I saw Melvin's quote about not paying a backup a two million dollars or so. I'm not buying into the 'small market' nonsense at this point. There is no reason this team should not be awash in cash, at least to be able to increase the payroll a bit over last year- not to mention that basically every contract that they have is tradeable. It's not like they have dead money like Suppan or Marquis Grissom on the books.

That's a little too rich for my blood, but about what I expected. You could probably get Yuni/JHJ and have a million or more to spare for that much.

And be a worse team. And make less money at the gate and in merchandise

But you most likely (possibly with JHJ) wouldn't have to commit two years either. I'd have liked to have signed Barmes, but that's a lot of change for him. I'd have probably done 3/11 without hesitation, but $5.5 million per for Barmes is a lot to wrap my mind around. Hardy only got $7 million per and he hit 30 bombs last year in a partial season with plus defense
