College Basketball 2011-2012

Eh. Sometimes shots don't fall. They played well overall.

I think this is Bo Ryan's coaching motto. They played excellent defense as usual, and if their shots fall they're hard to beat. The main problem I had tonight was Taylor's subpar shot selection in the second half. Otherwise, good team performance when no one's jumper was dialed in. This game will probably help the Badgers' stock come tourney time as much as hinder it. The only way this could work against you is if you're vying for a #1 or #2 seed, which I guess I don't think the Badgers will be.

Berggren was great, and Ryan's praise for him (passed along by the announcers, in-game) are things Bo Ryan just doesn't say about his basketball players. That was as eye-opening as anything Berggren did on-court, honestly.

Brust looked amped up, and like an excellent athlete. It's impressive to go from practice squad to relevant minutes at Dean Smith Center.

It's definitely impressive how much he improved over the offseason, but he was WAY too amped up in the first half. His shot selection was pretty poor for a while, though it's easy to see his potential with some of the athletic moves/shots he was creating.

The main problem I had tonight was Taylor's subpar shot selection in the second half.

There was a stretch in the 2nd half where Taylor, Evans, and Brust all took really quick shots. That seemed to really stall their momentum. Hopefully they learn from it and improve. Can't improve the defense too much that's for sure.

Agreed -- I just assumed he was geeked out of his mind to be playing in such a big game. He definitely needs to harness that energy, but like you said his potential was on full display.

It was a great game, but, cripes, it would be nice if they at least tried to look inside from time to time. They've been getting fewer and fewer post looks this season, hopefully Bergerren can spell some of that, and Frankie looks really good on the block (and he's a great passer) even though it looks like he's too uncoordinated to run.

I dont know. While I would like to see them post up more at one point in the second half they had more points in the paint than UNC, so it wasnt like they never got inside. Berggren is the only guy with a post game but he was actually better taking his guy off the dribble. They shot a lot of threes but they were really good looks for the most part. They had so many shots rim out Wednesday night.

What I love about this years team is even when the 3's are not falling they can still keep it close. Their defense looks much improved from last year.

Nice slate of games today. Starting off with UNC-Kentucky. If UNC can pull this one off, they should move up a couple of spots in the rankings.

I had no idea Marquette was supposed to be any good this year, so that should be a good game as well.

This is probably one of Marquette's best teams under Buzz. They only lost Jimmy Butler from last year and have Jamil Wilson who transferred in and Todd Mayo who looks good as a freshman. They Johnson-Odom and Crowder as their senior leaders and primary scorers. The Big East is down this year and Marquette should be thinking top 3 in that conference. They lose a lot after this year so it is a big year for them. I am guessing Johnson-Odom and Crowder will provide well over 50% of their scoring once the conference season starts and the bench shortens

Poorly reffed game all around. Marquette is deep this year. They were able to win without Crowder doing much. Mayo is a talented young player. He will be their number one scoring option next year. The Badgers lost because they could not control the boards. Marquette didnt shoot well but they got a ton of offensive boards

And because their all big-10 first team point guard and best player picked up a horrible 4th foul on an awful, awful call and had to sit for nearly 10 minutes.

This too. That was such a terrible call. The Marquette player was obviously moving and it should have been a 3 point play attempt. Instead Taylor is out for 10 minutes. There were a lot of bad calls but that was worst of all of them

jhart05, do you know when Tony Meier is going to be back?

Check last night's box score against DePaul.

I think it's safe to say one of the best shooters in the state is back. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Gritty win last night for MU, I think they were running out of gas a little bit there at the end. They are really deep and have many ways to score. Anything on Otule? Sure looked kinda bad, if he's out for awhile that could be problematic. I don't know how they were projected 6th in the Big East this year, that seems way too low. Other than Syracuse, I don't see anyone that is clearly better than Marquette.

MU is really impressive. They have to be one of the deepest teams in the country. Sleeper for Big East title?

I really don't know what to even make of them. I can't remember ever seeing a deep MU team, let alone one with Buzz' intensity. This could be a fun couple of years.

This happens every year to MU. They are projected to finish middle of the pack and be a bubble team in the NCAA, then they end up much higher and everyone acts surprised.

In terms of Otule, he is having everything checked out today, but Buzz said he didn't think it was too serious.

Marquette looked much better against Wisconsin than they did against Washington. The Huskies have not been good to start the year with losses to St. Louis and Nevada already. There was very little defense being played. Tons of wide open lay-ups and dunks. Not sure why people are impressed with how Marquette played last night.

I actually think Marquette is a top 10 type team but that was not good basketball last night. Marquette is deep. Mayo is going to be a player. He is already the third best player on that team in my mind. He is a very talented player.
