Was wOBA actually invented 100 years ago?

Saw this over on the Fangraphs community blog and thought it was a pretty fascinating read. Links to a PDF of FC Lane's original article in Baseball Magazine from 1915 in which he questions the accuracy of using batting average as the primary means to rank hitters and in the process invents a rudimentary version of wOBA, with some pretty accurate run values. Also some really good links in the comments for further perusal.
