Papelbon to Phillies

That's a great deal for the Phillies. Given how dominant Papelbon has been, this seems a touch under the market value for a closer of his caliber. The only thing holding him back might have been the Supply of closers this year

In 2015, the Phillies will have over $60 million owed to just Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, and Jonathan Papelbon. Even for a team with a mammoth payroll, that has the potential for a lot of dead money. The Howard extension is looking bad already and it doesn't even kick in until next season. This seems just as insane as the Madson contract rumor, especially for a team whose problem down the stretch was offense. They don't want to risk the big money on upgrading SS with Reyes, but they'll throw $50 million at a reliever?

$50 million is just too much to give to a guy who pitches three outs a game, even if you highly value the last three outs. Charlie Manuel doesn't seem like the type that would use him outside of the 9th inning, either.
