YOENIS CESPEDES!!!

apparently he will be granted free agency after defecting from cuba. has anyone seen his youtube video? he sure looks like a beast - insane- but a beast. looks like he is expected to get around a similar deal to what aroldis chapman got. i know OF isnt a great need but his kind of power could certainly help take away the sting of prince leaving. here is his video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mD_ZrcUZv94

No way the Brewers get him. He's rumored to be going to the Marlins, or possibly the Yankees. It would be sweet though.
While it is unlikely, no one had Chapman becoming a Red either.

I'd love to bring him in, but it would force the organization to move Hart to 1B, which apparently they aren't interested in.

Dude is a beast. I'd love to have him. MLBtraderumors.com said it the word is that it will take 'Chapman' money to sign Cespedes. That means around $30 million.

I bet the Marlins don't let him get away. They have the money to burn with the new stadium, not to mention the huge Cuban population in south Florida.

i think there is a better chance the brewers trade hart then move him to 1b if they are to pick up this guy. if 30m is all it would take to get this guy for 5(or 6, i'm not really sure how international FA works) yearsthen the crew should definatly make a runfor him. it could help out if the brewers resign yuni(face it, it will most likely happen)

So few Cuban players have had average or above careers, I'd hesitate to give him half of the $30M. Age questions, cultural adjustments, lack of top flight competition and comparables. Given the Crew would likely have to overpay due to a lack of a Cuban-American community, even moreso.

i really doubt there any real age issues with him, he says he's 26. if he was lying i'm sure he'd say he is 23 at the most.

Unless he's 32 :-)

As someone mentioned above, Cuban defectors have generally had a poor track record. Outside of the Hernandez brothers, most have busted. I think by opening the academy in the DR, the Brewers are going about things in the right way. I'd rather them invest the millions in like facilities for several years than to give one guy bu-cu dollars based on potential.

Not for 30M they won't, what if he flops? That's a lot of money for a flop, even if it's spread out to 5-6 years. I just don't think the Brewers are focused on that right now. Now if he was a shortstop...
So Suppan signing for more and he was a flop and you would be worried about $30m? The Brewers have signed many players that were flops for a lot more than $30m. To me $30m is rather cheap compared to the risk now if you were talking about a buyout fee of $100m plus the $30m contract then yeah that would be over the risk and reward that the Brewers would be able to handle.

Yes I know Cuban players haven't been all that they have been hyped about but the same can be said about any other prospect. Yes you are paying more for that player than you would for a drafted player but I have no problem with investing $30m into a player coming out of Cuba it is a rather good risk to take. This is not a lot of money to be giving a free agent with his skills. If he were an established MLB player you would be looking at $15-20m a year annually for him.

Combined, maybe, but Sheets was the first guy to get a 30M deal from the team and that was 2005. After that came Suppan, and now Braun & Gallardo. Hall's deal came close, but that was only 4/24.

Gammons is saying on MLB Network that Cespedes is going to either Miami, Texas, Detroit or one other team (missed it). Too bad the Crew couldn't take a big swing at him...

And Wolf...and now Aramis Ramirez, and Corey Hart. Though I wouldn't call them flops, just poining out additional 30 million dollar contracts. Amazing that I think Hall's deal was the biggest in Brewers history(or it was Sheets) and now we've discussed deals 3-4 times as large, and will probably(or possibly) have two 100 million dollar players on our payroll in Braun and Greinke(Zack hopefully for a little less, but close if we want to sign him).

Yes, and Suppan obviously was a terrible signing. But you know the difference? Cespedes is a PROSPECT. Not one MLB or even MiLB AB. Suppan and the others were established MLB players. Plus he's 26, as others mentioned. It's just too risky for a small market team like the Brewers, especially when their payroll is inflated at the moment.
