Jim Breen's Ideal Offseason

You aren't helping your defense of Breen here. If this were true, the Marlins would have no need to trade someone away for a piece they can pick up as a FA.

I don't agree with everything Breen had to say, I just thought him getting called amateurish was annoying. Besides, the presumed value Narveson would have to the Marlins is cost control. The Brewers as Breen-sently constructed would be able to afford to spend on a #4/#5 starter. Obviously the Marlins could too, but the assumption about them is always that they're cheap.

The Marlins would be getting the inferior player who has more service time than the better player they are trading away. There isn't any upside there.

Amateurish is harsh, but having the first move be a trade that isn't going to happen doesn't make a good impression.

Guys like Narveson can be found in FA every offseason

Getting a pitcher coming off 2 double digit win seasons in the FA market will require at least $4-5 million per year over more than one year. Sure you can find those guys, but why pay for one when you already have one at a fraction of that cost, at least in 2012 and that you still control on year to year basis for 3 more seasons? Obviously you could fill that spot with a Peralta, Estrada, or Fiers, but once again what do you do in 2013? Do you really want to extend the guy that was so awful for 2 months? Or do you really want to commit $90 or so to Greinke who if it weren't for great run support was just average the last couple seasons? Also do you really want to sacrifice Thornburg for a nice player in Headley before you give Green a shot?

If you're going to trade away pieces like Thornberg for a guy that will bury guys like Green, the guy you're getting needs to be a slam dunk upgrade over what you already had. Green could potentially outproduce Headley. Maybe not. I'm just saying, if you're giving up valuable pieces, the upgrades need to be more obvious than the one from Green to Headley.

Found a Yahoo Sports articlelisting the top 10 1B the Pirates should consider. Had this blurb about Morrison:

4. Logan Morrison(notes), Florida Marlins

[/b]

Logan Morrison is high on the good idea list but may be

low on the could happen list. Morrison was in the doghouse in Florida

and they reportedly wanted to trade him. Now the Marlins have a new

skipper and Morrison seems like a Ozzie Guillen guy. Even if the Marlins

decided to trade him there are some that think Morrison could be part

of a James Shield trade with Tampa Bay. Do the Pirates have somebody

better than Shields to offer?
