2012 Shortstop

...He is already poor defensively at short, as he gets older and/or injuries pile up, he will only get worse. Obviously the Marlins recognized this and are moving him....
It's this simple: Reyes at SS + Ramirez at 3B in '12 >>>>>> Ramirez at SS + anyone else the Marlins used at 3B in '11

You're assuming based on metrics that Ramirez's defense is poor & that's why they're moving him. They weren't moving him unless they could sign Reyes, which all along has clearly been about hugely raising the overall talent level and making a huge splash, not about fixing any alleged defensive issues.

Using your logic, the Yankees' motivation to get A-Rod from Texas and move him to 3B was due to their recognizing his defensive shortcomings rather than putting together one of the best L sides of the IF that money could ever buy.

No arguments here. However, the prospect of the Marlins signing Reyes a few months ago would have been a head scratcher. Don't get me wrong, Hanley has been a very good player, but I think he is overrated because he was often popping up on the 'one player to start a team lists' before this year. Offensively his career stats form a perfect bell curve. On paper, he should be a top 5 third basemen, but what if he repeats last season? This article echoes a lot of my concerns.

What about Edgar Renteria at SS? It seems like his fielding numbers are still decent, and he has hit lefties pretty well the last couple seasons. We'd probably have to sign somebody like Punto too, because I don't think we'd be able to rely on him to play every day.

What is everyone willing to go for Jimmy Rollins? It seems like the Brewers have serious interest and are talking to him again at the meetings.

I would rather not sign him to anything longer than a 3 year deal. He wants 5. Not sure how I feel about 4. He is going to be an upgrade over Yuni but I am not sure what he is expecting for a contract

For Rollins, I wouldn't want to go any longer than 3 seasons, and would prefer a team option for that 3rd season. I realize that wouldn't get a deal done, most likely. I guess he'll get 4 years from Philly.

I'm incredibly scared that K-Rod will accept arby, and all we'll end up with other than him is Yuni to man SS.
K-Rod wants to be the closer he will get a 0% chance to do that in Milwaukee and thus will not accept arbitration. It is not about the money for K-Rod it is about being that guy at the end of the bullpen as the closer he will take less to be a closer. If the Brewers land Ramirez it will be donwn to Yuni and Gonzalez and between the two it will be who is the cheapest.

I'm still in the "anybody but Yuni B" camp. I think Jimmy Rollins, while there are several legit concerns there, would be a mega-huge upgrade over Yuni B
I don't care for Yuni, but there are some worse options out there. Miguel Tejada, for instance.

I just hope we don't end up with him because there are no other 'veteran starters' available. The Brewers seem to have this affection for veterans, irregardless of their value. I'd rather take a chance with a younger player (who that is another question).

So many of the players available are aging, fading veterans - Tejada, Cabrera, Gonzalaz, Wilson, Renteria. There's no upside on these guys.

If you are looking for upside in the free agency market you are looking in the wrong market. There is hardly ever any player that is going to be available in free agency that is going to give you any upside at all. Nearly all of the players who have fit free agency have either peaked or just about to peak performance wise. Free agency is mostly veteran players you are not going to find much of an upside in free agency even Reyes doesn't have much upside left in him in fact he has probably already has peaked the same with Fielder and any other free agent out there. Tejada is worse than Yuni he had no range at 3B now imagine him trying to play SS again the Giants trade that last year and he was worse than Yuni there. Gonzalez is the best defensively out of the bunch but probably only better than Tejada offensively right now.

Gonzalez would be the perfect fit for the Brewers as he could be the #8 or #7 hitter in the lineup and he would make the teams defense better. If the Brewers could get him for $2m or less then that would be a great signing.

I'm only saying this because many insiders are reporting that K-Rod and Madson may accept arby, because the market for closers isn't looking good anymore and they seem to be on the outside looking in. The possibility is still there. It's far from a slam dunk that he won't accept, even though many believe he won't.

With an Aramis signing looking more likely I wonder if we could fit Jason Bartlett into our budget?

Do you really want Bartlett? He's been pretty bad the last two years (after a great 2009). I really haven't seen him play, so I can't say much about his defense (he's had negative fielding values in UZR the last three years).

I think he's due $5.5 million - and a $1.5 million buyout for the following year (or $5.5 million in 2013).

At 32, we've probably seen his peak performance. Not against him - I just don't really know much about him.

In my perfect world we somehow re-sign Prince and deal Gamel in a package for Brendan Ryan and maybe Chone Figgins to be the super utility.

In my realistic world, if Ramirez is signed, I believe there should be enough for Furcal. It makes the left side a little old but realistically this is probably the best way to compete in 2012 and 2013 given the fact that we have no prospect SS on the horizon.

I do like the idea of signing Rollins and trading for Chase Headley from SD to play 3B. We become kind of a different team in that scenario, but I believe that a Rollins/Headley would be a stronger combination than Ramirez/Furcal. I just don't believe it likely for us to pry Rollins away from Philly, nor do I believe we will trade the necessary pieces for Headley.

Why are those the only options? I think trading for a guy like Cliff Pennington, Jason Bartlett or Jed Lowrie to name a few, could also be potential options. I will lose a lot of interest in the team if Yuni and Casey are back. I can't see that happening.

Really the main reason they'll bring him back is to save money, because he'll be dirt cheap. Probably the cheapest option out there. And if Ramirez, Hawkins, and Saito are all signed, which seems very possible now, there will be very little money available.

The brewerfan meltdown after Yuni re-signs will likely be one of the biggest ever. Should be an interested thread to read through. I think it'll be similar to the vent thread after we lost to the Cards, lol. We'll call this one the 2012 Yuni-B Vent Thread, and just keep it open all season.
