2012 Shortstop

When Reyes has been healthy he has great range.

Has this actually happened?

Seriously, I'd say that the odds of Yuni returning are probably ten-fold over those of Reyes coming here. I'm not convinced that the Brewers are going to take the 'nine figure plunge', but if they do, it's going to be on a proven commodity such as Fielder or Greinke. Reyes is way too risky to make such a commitment, not even considering the fact that Melvin isn't exactly the type of guy to live on the edge.

My guess is that they will make a run at Barmes, and then look into bringing Yuni back if he wants too much. There's not really much else out there- unless you want to give Rollins a contract based on his production 5 years ago.

Barmes is now off the table, and count me in the camp that doesn't believe we have any real intention of signing Reyes (or Fielder for that matter)... so I wonder how much Rollins is going to end up with. I really have no idea. I sure would love him at 3 years / 30 million, but 4 years scares me unless it's for cheaper than 10 per year, and 5 years is a horrible idea. I have a feeling Philly or someone else will be willing to give him 4 years and 10+ per year, though... so maybe he's not a realistic option either.

I would be happy with either guy, if the price is right obviously. Gonzalez or Furcal would be good fall back options as well.

So long as we don't exceed 100MM for Reyes or 35 MM for Rollins, I'd be okay with the deals.

Some guy on Twitter is claiming the Brewers will announce Reyes signing tomorrow. I don't believe it, but makes for fun speculation.

That would be cool. Does this guy have any credability?

Doesn't look like he has any sources he's cited, so I kind of doubt it.

Edit: Actually he cites a "former Brewer," whatever that means.

I made up a rumor that Pujols was going to retire because he lost all passion for the game. Think that goes anywhere?

I'll tweet this out to people saying 'Brewerfan.net is reporting that Pujols will retire'. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Adam McCalvy was on 1250 this morning, talking about the shortstop situation. He felt that Yuniesky Betancourt might be the Brewers' most realistic option, but that another team could very well sign him if the Brewers wait around too long.

Here's to hoping that some other team does sign him so Melvin has to look elsewhere.

I get the feeling that DM really likes YuBet. It would be wonderful is someone would sign him, but who realistically would?

Who does Houston have to replace Barmes? If Ed Wade was still around this would seem like his type of deal.

If Betancourt is back, the Brewers have no chance of going as far as they did this year in the playoffs. If you replace Gamel with Fielder on the same team, we probably win 10-12 less games.

If you add a Reyes or Rollins and they have a good year, along with everyone else staying basically healthy, we could/should make the playoffs again.

I could see a team that needs a 2B or a backup SS signing Betancourt.
Wait, you could see Yuni playing second???? Really?
2B is not as demanding defensively as SS is so yeah Yuni could easily play 2B but it wouldn't be all that great defensively.

Any major league SS could play 2B or 3B, though it may take time to adjust to angles, the pivot, etc. They do not require the range (3B) or arm (2B). That's why the average SS can barely hit, it's a very difficult spot to play, even at Yuni's level of 5-12 runs below average.

So Prince was at least a 10 WAR player this year? I don't buy that. The Brewers may very well win 10-12 less games but it won't be due to just losing one player. I say the difference between Gamel and Prince is 3-4 wins.

Not only that, but Gamel is then a replacement player. I agree, pretty unlikely.
