Ryan Doumit

Al from Al's Ramblings mentioned Doumit as a possible free agent signing and it makes alot of sense. Doumit could platoon with Gamel at 1B as needed, back-up Lucroy at Catcher, play a little OF as needed and provide some solid pop off the bench... I like his career .334 OBP (.353 OBP last season) and he's only 30. His career 25% caught stealing percentage as a Catcher ain't bad either (Lucroy's is 29%)

Doumit would be a solid upgrade over Kottaras and likely not super expensive. Sounds like the Pirates will decline his option

Al must be reading my posts (page 4 on the 1st basemen thread). Doumit is a good bat. But his nickname is "No-Mitt" Doumit. I was shocked though that his caught stealing % was that good. Brewers have run on him at will. He's considered a poor defensive catcher by most accounts. The platoon idea won't work either. Almost all of his power is from the left side.

yeah I took a longer look at his career stats and he does have better career numbers from the left side than right. He really struggled in 2010 throwing out only 11% of baserunners but other than that season he's been solid if not spectacular

I would be all for Doumit taking over Kotsay's role. I would think if they did sign him they would keep another catcher on the roster, possibly Maldonado for defensive purposes. I just wonder what it would cost since he made about 5 million this year.

His OBP is about the same from each side, but his SLG is better from the left side. Still, he would have his uses, especially as a utility type player. They might even want to carry another C, and use him like they did Kotsay.
As a back up CF?

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Ha! Good one. Actually Doumit would be the perfect replacement for Kotsay if for nothing else that Roenicke won't be tempted to play him in CF.

Doumit made $5.2 million this year. I would think the Brewers would want to pay alot less for a sub than that... not sure how much less Doumit would accept or how many teams would want him. I'm thinking a backup catcher who can get a .330 OBP and play OF & 1B is pretty valuable. Thats a pretty big step up from the Wil Nieves/Johnny Estrada types

Yeah, I'd love to see that backup catcher spot used creatively. Doumit's not good behind the plate, but he can't be worse than Kottaras. Good pop & versatility. I just like the idea of using this spot to get another 150-200 PAs out of a good lefty/switch bat.

Doumit is going to be expensive for a bench bat. Unless the Brewers trade Gamel away I would rather not go after Doumit. After reading that Doumit turned down a deal from the Dodgers that was just less than $3m on a 1-year deal I believe Doumit is looking for a deal around 2-3 years with at least $5-8m annually. I am not sure I would want the Brewers to do that for a bench player.

He's versatile enough that he could be used 4-5 days a week and get 450 ABs.. After all Kotsay got 233 AB's and Fielder never took a day off..

What he's looking for and what he'll get are 2 different things. He's probably best suited for an AL team that can DH him though.

If they were to get him, I'd guess they'd keep Lucroy and either Maldonado or Kottaras. Roenicke likes to use his 2nd catcher, so having someone like Doumit who can be a third option at Catcher wouldn't be a bad thing. However, if he already turned down a $3MM deal, I doubt he's a Brewer in 2012 unless the offers completely dry up and Melvin is able to snag him just prior to Spring Training.
