Trade Value of Nyjer Morgan

Everyone in the lineup doesn't have to hit HRs to contribute offensively

ISO isn't just about HR. But I'm guessing you know that.

these aren't the types of players an organization should build around

Is there anyone who is suggesting that Morgan is someone the Brewers should build around?

If you're talking about blocking one of you better prospects so Morgan can continue to play then it is almost the same as suggesting that the Brewers should build around Morgan.

You said earlier in this thread that you wanted to have Morgan next year. So how is keeping Morgan for one more year blocking a prospect and building around Morgan?

People have said that it's a good thing that Morgan is under control through 2014. That doesn't mean that anyone has said that he should be in a Brewer uniform the entire time and any CF prospect should be traded away.

It means that it's great that Melvin was able to buy low on a candidate, get a great return for the first year, expect at least an average season and hope for another good season for 2012 and then still be able to trade him because he would still offer another team 2 years of control.

My original post said that Morgan was a nice stopgap. Someone else asked in what world he was considered a stopgap. I took that to mean that he wanted Morgan around for awhile, longer than a one or two year stopgap which is what I consider him.

Schafer isn't that good of a prospect.

He's never going to be confused with Andrew McCutchen but we don't currently have anyone in the system that profiles as regular all-stars like we did when Fielder, Weeks, and Braun were coming up. The current backbone of the team includes a lot of veterans who are starting to get expensive (Braun, Weeks, Hart, McGehee) and three starting pitchers who will be free agents after next season. Somewhere along the line you're going to develop your own guys so you can save money. And while Schafer may not profile to be a major league all-star, he is currently one of the best positional prospects we have.

We'll see but I think the Brewers like him a lot. He's hit .300 at every level from high A on up, with good plate discipline, good defense in CF and adequate speed. While he lacks HR power, his career .427 SP suggests he has gap power.

We're in the "next stage" of our long-term building process. Now we've got some good guys locked up and need to fill in young guys around them, hopefully finding some gems we want to lock up along the way. I think we'll see a different looking Brewers team going forward, which will be built more around pitching, but yes, we will need some position players to come up through the system. Next year, we should see Gamel and Green play significant roles. Then, we'll see Schafer and maybe Gindl or one of our other RF prospects. If we see those four, along with Lucroy and the locked up Weeks and Braun, we will pretty much have a home-grown lineup. We just need to find a SS somewhere.
