Now tornado warning in Grant County (near the Iowa border) also.

It's probably gonna be one of those nights where watches and warnings are issued off and on for a while.

Yeah, it was a barrel of fun driving back to Madison. We heard about the warnings for Jefferson (thunderstorm) and Grant (tornado) and stopped to eat before leaving town. Still, we were caught in torrential rain just east of Madison, about a half hour ago. We slowed way down and drove with flashers, in part because so many drivers had pulled over that there wasn't much space left for pulling over.

I live on the west side of Madison and right now is the first rain I've had all day.

I've heard thunder in the distance all afternoon (Shorewood Hills area, I think), and now finally it's gently raining. There have been waves of blue sky alternating with gray all afternoon into the early evening.

Luckily, I just pulled all of the food off the grill about 10 minutes before the rain began.

on the way to the game today, we drove through the biggest down pour I have ever seen...It was raining so hard I couldn't see the car 5ft ahead of me..The roads had standing water that turned into huge puddles in a matter of a min..I would have been better in a boat than in a car

As Hawing said there was some torrential rain on the way home from Milwaukee I took my friend home who lives on lake street and then drove home only stopping to fill up gas at the happy barn exit.

I hit a nice down poor around the Sullivan exit all the way to Johnson Creek. It then picked up again around Sun Prairie When I got on the interstate to go south and catch the belt line we were all doing 20mph I could barley see the car in front of me and the world dairy headquaters building was no where to be seen. I saw at least 10 cars pilled over with their flashers on.

That was the worst rain I have driven in.

I know the timeframe for last night's nasty weather has passed, but let me tell you, I was awakened by a massive thunder boom this morning around 6 AM which was followed by two more in about 5 minutes.

I can sleep through just about anything and that boom woke me straight up. Sucks, because it also woke up my daughter who refused to go back to sleep.

Now there saying that there could be a worse outbreak of tornadoes and severe weather wed. night- thurs. night. I recommed everyone to watch on those days and go out and buy a weather radio if u dont have one. There very useful and could save your life.

I just got an Oregon Scientific weather radio and I can't get decent reception in my house. Lots of static when it's on the proper channel. Think I should try new batteries?

I really haven't gotten around to exploring the radio and all of it's features because of the static and it's beginning to annoy me. I have programmed in the proper channel, so that's not the problem.

When I used the outlet instead of batteries, I got less static and actually heard the NWS report. I wonder if that had more to do with location or electricity instead of the pre-packed AAs.

Does Kohl's still have their sale going on them??

What did they have?

Here's what I have:

Location can make a difference - both the location of the radio in your house and where your house is in relation to the NWS station.

The pre-packed batteries are almost certainly cheapos and might be old themselves. Our model radio is not like yours, but we keep it plugged in with a 9V battery backup. That combination has worked for us.

I'd expect most parts of Madison to have decent reception. For what it's worth, the radio we keep here at my workplace is tuned to channel 7, which comes in fine. This is in a large old stone building where AM/FM radio reception is often a challenge. I think we use the same channel at home (near west side) and it's fine there too.

All of wisconsin is under a Moderate Risk of Severe Weather for tommorow. Weather Radios are 20 dollars and any electronic stores so if you dont have one, get one. Right now there is a risk for 80-90 mph damaging winds, large hail to baseball size and Tornadoes possiblility exsists for F4 or F5. If you have a picture of any severe weather you should post it here. Thanks. Stay Safe

Right now Damaging Winds is the biggest factor. This is what the national weather service said:

the low pressure system moves across northeast Minnesota into southern Canada Thursday afternoon and evening, it will drag a strong cold front through southern Wisconsin. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along this cold front. Some of the thunderstorms are likely to be severe, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts. In fact, conditions appear favorable for Derecho formation. A Derecho is a widespread and long lived windstorm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Tornadoes are also possible through this event. The Storm Prediction Center has put southern Wisconsin in a moderate risk of severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening. More information on the risk levels issued at the Storm Prediction Center.

Winds without storms are supposed to be 50 mph gusts.

Some places in Central/North WI have already canceled schools and events for the day, and it isn't even raining yet. That has to say something about what people expect it to be like in the afternoon.

Are you kidding me?? You would think it's snowing out.

So, I've never seen an area under the "High Risk" category from the Storm Prediction Center, and now the entire state is High Risk. They also said that there is a good chance of a drecho forming. For those who do not know what a drecho is, it's nasty. They are storms that move really quickly, and have straight line winds well over 100 mph. Back when I was in high school, Port Washington (as well as most of Ozaukee, Washington, and Milwaukee counties) got hit with one in the middle of the night, and damage was very widespread and devastating.

I'm also headed up north this afternoon. We should be up there before all of this starts, but I'm wondering if our cabin has a storm shelter. Guess I'll have to ask that question. Being the weather freak I am (and when I was really young, thunderstorms of all kind freaked me out), I'm a bit nervous about this system. I'm hoping it's all hype and we only get a few showers out of the deal.

Yeah, Sgt, as you know I'm feeling your pain.

Stevens Point cancelled school for the whole day?

I'm choosing this post to drop my one-time bf.net "are you freakin' kidding me?" response. I could see an early dismissal, but I'm very surprised that they wouldn't even begin the school day.

I wonder if this will start a trend.

And, like some of you, I'm getting rather more nervous about what the afternoon's going to bring. I might be spending extra time in this large sturdy building tonight!

In the past, when I was in the Point school district, they wouldn't cancel school for a blizzard, so unless there has been a dramatic shift in policy, they are anticipating very bad, near disaster, weather.
