Yeah that rain is definitely headed for St. Louis. I agree, Narveson or Wolf should start tonight if it appears there will be a rain delay. If it looked like the rain is coming in the 2nd-4th inning, you could start one of them and then bring Gallardo in after the rain moves through.

Im glad im not the only one who thought of that scenario. That is bringing Gallardo in after say Narvy/Wolf/Estrada. I dont know if logistically that would even be feasible but then Yo would get his "start" in and would still be in line for a game 7 call if it gets to that point

If it looks like rain, Gallardo really shouldn't start.

Agree 100%, we can't afford the game to be called after a few innings and lose Yo's start. He has been the lone bright spot for the starting pitching this entire postseason. Start Wolf or Navy, and if the game somehow plays out so be it. Maybe we can steal a W and then have Yo saved for tomorrow.

The Kotsay in CF move is one of only a few moves RR has made that I see no rational for whatsoever. RR said something about needing the extra firepower to scrape together some runs in a low scoring game, which is terrible logic to me. This just puts us in position as the more likely team to give up several runs, so the offense boost is negated. Unless he's actually scared that we are going to score 0 runs, in which case I have a lot of other worries. This move essentially tells Yo he needs to pitch 7 innings of scoreless baseball with a horrible defense against maybe the best offense in baseball.

Is Braun - Kotsay - Hart the worst defensive outfield in MLB playoff history? Seriously I can't think of any that was worse

OK, back to praying for rain

Braun/Hart > Holliday/Berkman ... The CF throws it towards St. Louis though. However, I am willing to bet two teams have never fielded such a poor combined defensive outfield in a Championship series game than what we are about to see.

From Trenni:

Roenicke was posed an interesting question about possibly using a pitcher other than Gallardo to start the game if he knows it will be delayed. Roenicke admitted it's a great idea, but because weather is so unpredictable, that may not be a viable option.

Weather two hours out really isn't that unpredictable. If something is plainly going to hit (or even has an 80% chance of hitting) there is no difference in using Hawkins to start the game, as opposed to starting the 7th inning, and having Yo start the 3rd.

Rules question: Is the pitcher considered in the lineup, before he throws a pitch? IE: Could Kotsay hit in the first, Gomez be listed as the SP, and then have Hawkins slide into the 2-slot in the order?

The listed starter must pitch the first half inning

This seems strange to me. The listed starter doesn't have to make it through the first half inning. Could he throw one pitch and be removed? Not trying to be snarky, just honestly curious.

Maybe tonight is when RR would do well to imitate Jimmy Leyland in some respect. Stick Gallardo in the outfield or something, just to see http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Has LaRussa announced his lineup yet? I wonder if he's waiting to see what the weather does and is contemplating not starting Carpenter.

LaRussa is considering starting Gerald Laird in CF tonight, because he doesn't want to get out-managed...

One thing interesting about the possibility of having to using a different starting pitcher after a few innings is that the Cards don't have a 5th starter on the playoff roster. They'd have to use relief pitchers tonight (they probably will anyway, right?) because they would not be able to go with Lohse, unless they want to go with Garcia on 3 days rest tomorrow. In that regard, advantage Brewers, unless we think the rest of the Brewers starters will continue to crap the bed and we absolutely NEED Yo to pitch, regardless of the opposing starter.

It's not viable because.... why?

I think he's just saying that if they don't know for sure that the game will be delayed after, say, two innings, that they couldn't start someone else because it could backfire if the game never ends up getting delayed/isn't delayed for long.

I'm sure he and the coaches have been discussing it.

I think you're on it dlk9s. RR is just saying that you can't predict when it's going to start raining again on nights like this, so you don't know when the best time would be to plug in your starter.

I wonder if not having Westbrook on the roster will bite the Cardinals.....not that he's that great anyway.
