Brewers have serious interest in Jose Reyes?

Instead of gambling on a long term deal with an injury prone SS... why not offer a 1 year deal to a guy like Grady Sizemore? Who knows if Sizemores option will be picked up? But I'm thinking it would be in Sizemores interest to sign a 1 year deal and hope to improve his value. The upside of a guy like Sizemore is just as good as the upside on a guy like Reyes.

Don't get caught up in the name Sizemore...I'm just saying someone like him is who I think Melvin will be looking for in an attempt to re build our team for next year.

It's moves like that , that will put us in the playoffs. The Cardinals for example wouldn't' be in the playoffs if it weren't for Lance....and they probably wouldn't have advanced to the WS if it weren't for Furcal. I think Suppan burned Melvin so bad, he's going to be shy to gamble on any aging vet w/ an injury history. Melvin loves to over pay guys on one year deals and hope they pan out. If he misses no big deal...if he hits.... we just might have a WS contender. The core of our team is set.... no need to try and build Rome in a day with one signing.

Because Grady Sizemore isn't a SS. He's a CF and we already have two of them.

Yea the 2 CF's we have a great. ha! I'll be shocked of Morgan is back on this team.

The focus for Melvin should be to replace Prince's bat.... NOT spend everything you have on a SS. That's how a GM gets burned badly in FA. It will be a heck of a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace Prince's bat in the line up with an OF and a 1st basemen. Then sign the best defensive SS you can get. This talk of Reyes IMO is insanity.

Either way you need 5 OF's. Neither Morgan or Gomez is a starting OF. They are bench players and good depth.

Yeah they are. Considering we got 6 wins of production from the CF spot, I'd say they are. But, no, go ahead. Go get rid of two cost controlled CF who compliment each other wonderfully to go get a free agent who may or may not have any knees anymore and is made of glass. That makes sense.

Morgan and Gomez can be depth in the OF. BUT like I said...don't get hung up on the name. A 1 year deal on some players with a ton of upside is were Melvin is going to look.

If we are going to replace Prince's bat then we'd better be looking in the OF and 1st base. No 1 player is going to do it. The most important aspect at SS is going to be defense and dependability. Locking up $ on Reye's that should be given to SP is maybe the dumbest move we could make.

Signing Reyes is dumb, but it makes infinitely more sense than going out of your way to create a hole, then plugging it with a declining free agent.

There is no reason for the Brewers to be looking at free agents other than RP, 1B, SS, and RF. Maybe SP if you can unload Wolf. Maybe 3B if you don't like Green.

Are the Brewers just really bad at evaluating shortstops? We had Scutaro and got rid of him for something that escapes my memory. He went on to have a pretty solid career. We had Hardy, and traded him for a platoon (at best) outfielder. He had a monster year this season, and signed a pretty reasonable extension, if I remember right. We had Escobar, who the book isn't written on, and we traded him for our current shortstop, who we don't want, and seems like he may be our shortstop again next year. I wasn't a fan of the Hardy deal when it was made, and even less so now.

I'll give you the Hardy trade.

Scutaro was lost on waivers before he ever played a major league game. This was after his FOURTH season in AAA, so it's not like he was a can't-miss prospect.

Technically, you are correct - Escobar was traded for our current shortstop. I think there might have been some other pieces to that trade. Personally, I think they traded Escobar at the peak of his value, which is exactly what people are always clamoring for the Brewers to do.

Grady Sizemore's run from 2005-2008 has to be one of the top four year stretches any centerfielder has put together in his generation. Power, speed, walks and plus defense out of centerfield while topping 700 plate appearances in all four years. Obviously he's been hurt for years now and we have no need for him given the current configuration of our roster, but I'm curious how you fell others rate him that he has been so overrated?

Someone I wouldn't mind checking in on with the Sox likely to pick up Scutaro's option while having Iglesias in the pipeline is Jed Lowrie.

Jed Lowrie maybe a non tender candidate. I don't see the Red Sox keeping Lowrie and Scutaro is probably going to be their back up plan if Iglesias can't handle playing every day. Iglesias is better defensively than Lowrie and Scutaro combined but offensively he is horrible probably worse offensively than Betancourt.

I would add Bill Hall to that narrative. He was very good as a shortstop in 2005 and 2006; then the team moved him to cf in 2007, to 3b in 2008, and to Seattle in 2009 when he had lost all his value. The Brewers have done an astonishingly bad job of managing their ss resources. Maybe we can forgive the Scutaro giveaway, but the team has developed three straight ss prospects and then sold low on them (granted, Escobar may never rise above "low"). This may be Doug Melvin's greatest failing as GM -- arguably he has done worse with signing old pitchers, but at least there he has managed a few wins against his losses and seems to have learned some lessons over time. If DM picks up Yuni's option, rather than paying peanuts for whatever AAA scrub is at the top of the unwanted ss talent pile, it will be another sorry chapter.

Lowrie has declining defense, higher than average injury risk, extreme splits (excellent vs LHP), and an expected decline once he leaves Fenway...and he's still above average at SS. There sure is money to be made at C and SS if you can hit at all. I added him at Misfit Toys, just above Hairston.

I would be perfectly happy with the offseason for the offense and defense standpoint if Barmes and Cuddyer are added to the team. I don't know a lick about Cuddyer's defense so I don't know who would play 1st and RF between Hart & Cuddyer. I would guess they are pretty interchangeable.

Sign Barmes and Cuddyer, resign Saito, and bring in one more 7th or 8th inning type and I would be pretty happy. Perhaps trade Narveson or Wolf and see what that could get you.

The most likely scenario at SS will be another year of Betencourt. But I could see Melvin bringing in a defensive player to platoon the SS position.

Replacing Prince's bat is the biggest concern. I guess I'm one of the few who does not like the situation in CF. I think we could do better. I don't like Morgan. He's streaky offensively, and average defensively. Gomez is good defensively but struggles at the plate. If the plan for next year is to win the WS, then an upgrade in the OF should be something we look at. Morgan and Gomez are bench players. They are good depth. If we can land a solid offensive and defensive CF then we should do it. If not then the status quo is what we'll have.

We'll need to acquire a 1st basemen who can hit for power and average. That most likely will be trade or a 1 year deal for an aging vet. as a stop gap.

If I'm melvin I make a serious attempt at signing the best SP we can get. I'd also bring in a stud setup RP. If we can acquire an ace SP with that Prince $, then it's a good move. Grienke, Marcum, and Wolf are all FA's in 2013. The $ will be there if we can land a #1 or #2 SP.

Add someone to compete with McGeehee at 3rd. and a solid 1st basemen. A legit lead off hitter would be great, but I don't know if one is out there. Protection for Braun is really the issue with Prince's departure. Signing a veteran to a one year deal is something that should also be done. The cardinals would not be where they are with out Lance and Furcal.

So you wanna keep Yuni but bring in a new CF, 1B, SP, RP, and 3B? And not only that but the CF must be "solid" offensively and defensively, even though that's exactly what Morgan is. And the 1B must be able to hit for power and average (so Prince?). The SP must be an ace and the RP must be a stud. Sorry but we're not the Yankees/Red Sox/Phillies. Not only are these players not usually freely available, they also cost a lot of money. There's no way to get a stud at every position.

The CF platoon is more than solid offensively and defensively. A 1B who hits for power and average will usually cost a lot in terms of money and/or prospects. The cheaper guys are the ones who hit for one or the other (power - Branyan-type or avg - Loney-type). Obviously there are only a limited number of ace SP so they will also cost lots in terms of money/prospects. Same with the stud RP. The Brewers have to do the best they can with what resources they have. That would be leaving CF as is, giving Gamel/Green/possibly McGehee/Hairston 1B/3B, and upgrading SS and another arm in the pen.

The CF part is the most hilarious/absurd. The Brewers ranked 6th this season in CF WAR with an even 6.0. Morgan, for his career, is a 4 win player per 162 games and is under team control for 3 more years.

To even suggest that we need any change in CF is bordering on insanity.

Morgan's "streaky" offense must be what kept his BA going back & forth between about .320 and .335 most of the season. I'll take that kind of streaky.

I'm not gaga about Morgan, but other than some rather questionable plays in the playoffs, I thought he was pretty darn solid all year. Even the world's best defensive players (not that Morgan's one of them) are going to make a few boneheaded plays over the course of the year, some of which may directly blow a game or two for their team.

Back to the original topic of the thread, as I've stated elsewhere, I'd LOVE to see the Brewers land Reyes, however long the odds may seem....

On a related point, I believe Melvin's season's-end pro-Yuni comments not only are fair at face value (in a certain legitimate way), but also could very well be classic GM-speak along the lines of the once-oft-heard "I'm not motivated to move Overbay" mantra. Assuming the timing's right, there's nothing stopping Melvin from including Yuni in some other deal along with the $2M from KC to pay for the option, essentially leaving the choice on his option to another team. . . . However seemingly unrealistic this scenario, it's nonetheless easily feasible.

Pretty much every baseball player is streaky, aside from the ones who hit like .340. Well they are streaky too, except you don't care when they only hit .280 for a couple weeks. SS is our biggest weakness on offense and our only one that we don't have a capable replacement for. Every team can always use an ace starter but there just aren't that many available.

If Reyes signs with Philly...how pricey might Rollins be?

Very, and you'd be signing him for probably at least two or three seasons (at minimum) & for a lot of money. No thank you! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
