Here is a thread started by a Cardinals fan who is filing a complaint with TBS because Brian Anderson is calling the games for TBS.

You can't make this stuff up.

I just want to point out that two of the next three posters wanted Uecker instead. They're not all crazy.

I've met Mr Baseball in person many times and there is a big difference between the nice guy they talk about and the real joke of a person that is behind that fake persona. I can't stand the man and by the way I've seen him act have no prob voicing it. He is rude and short tempered with fans and has no business bringing his unprofessional self to national TV. Again, he is a joke and has no business representing any team other than the classless Brewers and Nyjer Morgan.

Welcome!

Or was he quoting someone from the Cards board?

He was quoting somebody. Of course we have already heard Uecker is kind of a jerk to fans other times. I have no idea if that is true.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Not to derail this very amusing thread, but I would say it is more that Uke isn't interested in making small talk at this point. When I met him at the On Deck event in January, he was polite, bit it was obvious he didn't wish to chit chat.

Here's some gems from the stltoday.com game thread:

1. "...worst announcers I have ever heard..no knowledge of the teams..unbelievable." (complaining about the announcers was common).

2. Here's a comment on the pitcher, Garcia: "Any chance we can take back that contract we gave

this weak-minded piece of dung. He is no good period and he plays the

game like a little baby."

3. "garcia sucks. tony's an idiot. and the play by play guy is ecstatic"

4."Whats wrong with that stupid announcer ???? Does

he think he is in Brewer TV or what??? Someone on TBS should say

something to him"

5. "Alright, someone on the Brewers needs to get some chin music.

I'm so sick of them showboating after home runs. Let them know there's going to be a price to pay for that."

6. "lots of loud bandwagoners at Miller Park"

7. "The Brewers are stealing signs somehow... I don't know how they are doing it, but they KNOW what pitch is coming..." (there were lots of Brewers cheating comments, too)

8. "The announcer is a disgrace he sounds like he is

having an orgasm every time the Brewers score. Its bad enough to see

this beating put to hear this guy having the time of his life?? When

the Cardinals did score it was a completely different emotion by those

clowns"

Well, that's about all I can stand to read for now.

I love the bandwagon comments. The Brewers had a better attendance pct than the Cardinals ( http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/sort/homePct ) despite having a smaller metropolitan area than St. Louis ( http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_NSRD_GCTPL2.US24PR&prodType=table ). Also, the last time I watched the Brewer vs Cardinal game in St. Louis, I was literally the only person paying attention to the game in the bar. On the way back I had to catch the rest of the game on Cardinal radio with Mike Shannon (see: http://bitsandpieces1.blogspot.com/2005/08/collection-of-shannonisms.html) and the amount of doom and gloom coming from fans calling in after the game was pretty entertaining. I guess you can't really generalize fans that call into sports talk radio, because Milwaukee gets pretty ridiculous.

You don't get 3 million fans in a season by a simple band-wagon. Maybe the Brewers bandwagon started in 2006, because they've been above the NL average since then. Even non-playoff seasons of 2008,2009 had the same attendance percentages as the Cardinals... the Cardinals even won the Central in 2009 and the Brewers out-paced the Cardinals in terms of park percentage full (http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2009/sort/homePct). Brewers were below 500 that year.

It's not like we're the Rams who went from having a small fan base for their new franchise in St. Louis, to selling out games when they were good, to being third last in attendance (http://espn.go.com/nfl/attendance/_/year/2010). And that's for a sport with 8 home games a year.

So they're complaining about BA. I suppose they are not used to having full blown Cardinals homers on the national broadcasts since forever (Garagiola, Jack Buck, Tim McCarver, Joe Schm... I mean Buck, etc.)
Exactly! BA actually brought that up in an interview with the JS.

Here are two quotes from it that make the Cards fans look like babies. I dont remember the Philly fans complaining in 2008 (maybe they did but I dont remember it). And bringing up the Bucks is a great example as well. I bet they weren't complaining then either.

"I did the Brewers and Phillies in’08," Anderson said in a phone

interview. "I don’t think it’s a big deal for a play-by-play guy. I

don’t sit there and have a sense of am I favoring the Brewers or not

favoring an opponent."

"You look at (Vin) Scully," Anderson said. "He called Dodgers World

Series games. Joe Buck has called Cardinals World Series games. Jack

Buck (Cardinals). Jon Miller (San Francisco). It’s just part of the

fabric of the game. Where else are they going to pull from?

Great point...don't forget St. Louis transplant Bob Costas. I've actually enjoyed all those guys over the years...I even like Joe Buck (I know, I'm in the minority). Ragging on BA is just sour grapes...the guy is a true pro. He was not homering on Braun's first shot. He did get excited on Prince's shot, but it was a defining moment in the game that any announcer would have gotten jacked for. It's the drama of the situation not the team or being a homer announcer.

I really like this announcing team. BA is great, Darling is as blunt as they come and Smoltz is solid too...not sure about that goofy sideline reporter, but overall they are solid.

Costas is another good one, and I forgot about Dizzy Dean- who, though way before most of our time, was probably the first 'big' national TV announcer. No wonder the Cardinal fans have the undeserved rep as being the 'best fans in the game'. They've had their mouthpieces doing the game of the week almost continuously since it's inception.

The benefit for the audience is all the information. Being able to present Milwaukee, being able to present the Brewers and what they are and where they have been. That’s the payoff. It’s much more enjoyable for the audience. Any perception that you are not being fair is just not true.
Given that the Brewers play the Cards 18 times year in and year out, he's also in a great position to present St. Louis and the Cardinals.

As far as objectivity goes, I'm sure that there'll be times where Brewer fans get perturbed because Brian shows excitement when the Cards play well. Part of the job of an objective national announcer is to cheer good play.

Here's another Cards fan quote:

Carp is a sour puss but he's our sour puss and he can pitch...boy can he pitch.
I think this fan "gets it."

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I live down in STL, they hate Morgan like we hate Carpenter. Really the only griping I hear about is centered around Plush, which is what you would expect. They dislike Braun and Fielder, more because of what they can do.

On the Uecker front, he is a jerk in person. His right, but he doesn't even make an attempt to be polite "in public".

RockCoCougars]Frankly, Ueck is even kind of a Cardinal backer. You hear more about his time in St. Louis by far than you hear about the rest of his career, even though he only played 3 years or so there.

He won a World Series there in 1964. That tends to stick with you for a while.

The fact that he has been calling Brewers games for the past few decades shows where his allegiance lies. As popular as he has been, he could have taken jobs elsewhere in a heartbeat.
