502 Bad Gateway, white pages, etc. (2 topics merged)

Recommended Posts

Yes. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

I just got one a minute ago, and I've had frequent bouts with them over the past few weeks. You can rest assured that we're not alone.

There's nothing you can do on your end to fix the issue. It's totally a server problem. When you get these, keep reloading the page, and you should eventually get through.

I'll submit a help ticket.

The 502 issues should now be fixed. But I wouldn't be surprised if they recurred in the next couple of days.

What's happened is that Yuku has been sold to CrowdGather. This is the second sale of the company in ten months.

At the time of the sale, Yuku had no developers at all. The head guy was the only tech person, and he left the company with the sale. CrowdGather's developers are faced with the unenviable task of simultaneously keeping a broken system afloat and learning the platform.

This time around, the 502s were fixed within an hour or so of the developers becoming aware of the problem. That compares to 24 hours or more to address 502 issues that occurred three times last week.

Things were fine for a while. I reopened my ticket when 502s started for me again late this afternoon.

It seems to be fine now, although I've only been on the system for a few minutes. The announcement box at the help desk (help.yuku.com) currently says that there were a few reports of 502s late this afternoon and that staff is investigating.

By the way, you don't have to be a mod or admin to submit a ticket directly to Yuku. 502s are one of those things that can affect some members while others surf just fine. Knowing who's experiencing issues and who isn't might help the gurus to pin down the issue.

  • 2 weeks later...
Not sure if this is the same issue, but for the past two days I have been getting a lot of server errors when paging through threads, specifically the in-game threads it seems. Don't remember them saying 502 error, but it is possible. Using Chrome if that makes a difference or helps find a cause.

Yuku knows about the current white page issues and has developers working.

Since the purchase by CrowdGather, Customer Service has gotten much better about putting announcements on their help page. It's accessible by hitting the Forum Help link at the bottom of every page on boards and profiles.

When I experience these issues or see them reported by members, I'll submit a help ticket if there's no announcement. You don't have to be an admin or mod to submit a ticket, so you can feel free to report issues like this if you'd like.

There was an outage last night that produced some kind of error message if you were patient and let the page load long enough. I don't remember what error it was offhand, but it wasn't a 502. It might have been a "connection reset" message. 502s happen so frequently that I note that number right away. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Today's issue is white pages. It seems that they've been better over the past few minutes.

I switched to Google Chrome a couple days ago, and have also started having issues. This is the message I get (below). Usually I just have to try reloading it and it's fine, but it happens pretty frequently.

HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

Here is the error that I've been getting recently.

Server error

The website encountered an error while retrieving http://brewersfandemonium...persona-jumped-the-shark. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

Here are some suggestions:

Here's the current help desk message:

We are currently experiencing server issues. You may encounter frequent white pages, and errors when trying to post. The issues may also include not being able to edit signatures or access freshly uploaded images. Please rest assured that our team is working on having this sorted out as soon as possible. We profusely apologise for the inconvenience this is causing across the network.
It doesn't mention that in addition to the issues mentioned above, we're unable to approve new members. We get the PMs telling us that they've applied, but they don't go into our "pending" list (where the "approve' button is). I found that out via a help ticket today that the pending member issue is due to a server lag. My guess is that lag is also what causes people to be unable to edit signatures and access newly uploaded images. Along with that, avatar changes aren't taking.

I'm getting tired of submitting tickets. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif I had to submit one this morning to ask that chat be kick-started — again. It seems like I'm submitting one or two every day for one reason or another.

Thanks for posting that. 500 errors are in the same "family" as 502 errors. The bottom lines about those errors are:

  • There's nothing the end user can do about them.
  • They won't go away without staff intervention.
  • They start by popping up intermittently, and they're guaranteed to get worse.
  • They don't always affect everyone equally. I've seen tons of 502s, but no 500s.

These definitely need to be reported right away. If there isn't an announcement saying that staff is aware of the issue, I report them as soon as I see them. As I mentioned above, any of us can submit a ticket; you might decide that's more efficient than waiting for a mod to do it.

By the way, the help desk is hosted elsewhere. Issues that cause the boards to go down won't affect the help desk.

Yeah, this is getting really, really old. I just caught up with responses to five tickets for ongoing issues and submitted a new one. Chat is down again. Hopefully, it can be working by game time.

Gotta love the irony of the site I was going to:

Server error

Here are some suggestions:

Reload this webpage later.

The announcements board (announcements.yuku.com) should probably be off the system if it's going to do the most good.

Communication has gotten better since CrowdGather's been around, though. They seem to have made Customer Service realize that announcements about outages do no good if they're posted on a board that's affected by the outage. Outage information is now posted at the help desk instead. In terms of Yuku's standards, that's a huge breakthrough.

Communication still has room for improvement. During these episodes, help desk announcements should probably reflect the fact that announcements.yuku.com may not be available.

Things have been nice and zippy for me since last night's fix. However, I'm hearing that issues are slowly creeping up again. At this point, the help desk hasn't announced any problem.
