Agreed. Look at the playoff teams this year- most of them have a big hitter at first. I actually think that defense at first has been slightly undervalued historically, but here with Prince it seems overvalued- if that makes any sense.

Agreed. Nobody remembers the Tony Muser's of the world.

But Wes Parker is forever immortalized due to his guest spot on the Brady Bunch.
I remember the episode. Even back then most people didn't know who Wes Parker was. I only knew him because I had his baseball card. I was amazed back then because he had 100+ RBI with only 10 HR.

And then there was the Joe Namath episode. A classic.

The same Kyle Blanks who couldn't hold a spot in San Diego's every day lineup and who has a career OBP of .315? Or trade away yet another prospect from an already terrible system to get a stop gap for a year or two? Are these options really better than some combination of Gamel, McGehee and Green?
Well Adrian Gonzalez was there at 1B and then there is this prospect that they got from Boston who is also a very good 1B. The Padres have been trying to get Blanks in the lineup but they have been playing him in the OF and he has been playing sparingly. He barely has 500 PA's in his career so I wouldn't take his MLB numbers to mean all that much. He hasn't even played a full season yet in the majors. Blanks is definitely as good as Gamel and Green and he has more potential than McGehee, Green, and Gamel. Plus to trade for Blanks I doubt the Brewers will have to give up much. If anything they will have to give up a #5 OF which the Brewers have plenty of in their farm system. Also look at Blanks 24 year old season in AAA and compare that with Gamels at the same age. Blanks had a better year than Gamel did. Remember Blanks will only be 26 at the end of the season next year.

I hope people are not betting on the Brewers getting a 1st round pick for Prince because it doesn't look likely the Brewers will get a 1st round pick as most of the teams that will be looking at Prince will have protected picks.

There are four teams that have protected picks that could go after Prince. Those four being the Mariners, Marlins, Cubs, and Orioles. All of these teams could afford Prince and they all have protected picks which means the Brewers get a sandwich pick and you are not going to get a good player there unless you overpay for a player. The other two teams that could go after Prince pick 17th the Blue Jays and 29th the Rangers. It does not look good at all for the Brewers to get a 1st round pick at all. At best the Brewers are going to get a sandwich pick and a 2nd round pick.

If Kyle Blanks has more potential than Green, why would they trade him for a 5th outfielder? I'd definitely give up a fifth outfielder type for Blanks but I don't think that'll get it done.

The system is seriously flawed if we do not get any first round picks for Prince. This just ruined my day.

Keep in mind that while losing a player like Fielder is an awful blow, it does give them payroll flexibility to spend elsewhere. That's why there is discussion about Reyes.

Prince to the Blue Jays, sign Reyes. Best case scenario to me. Would still be able to cheer for Prince to take down the Yankees and Red Sox and get their first round pick. Signing Reyes would be amazing, we can only hope other teams looking to spend are set at SS or scared by his injury history. Who would be the suitors for Reyes? I wouldn't think the Red Sox would be after the Crawford signing. Yankess won't be after him as long as Jeter is there. Nationals, Angels, Cardinals, Brewers, Mets, maybe the Phillies and Giants?

The Nats like some kid they have there already, that's why we saw all the Ian Desmond trade rumors. The Cards supposedly are already working something with Furcal and may even have a handshake deal in place. Phils will resign Rollins. The Angels have Aybar who is quite good and cheaper. I'd think they look elsewhere. Giants and Mariners to me make the most sense.

I gotta give you a Keyshawn "Come awn Man" for this statement. A little over the top.

What is over the top? If you want top talent in the sandwich pick area or in the second round you are going to have to pay over slot. How is that over the top when it is the truth. Just look at this last draft with Bell getting a rather large signing bonus and he was a 2nd round pick. I'm sorry if you believe that you can get a good player at a good price with a sandwich pick area but that is just not true at all. You are going to have to overpay to get a good player at that spot. Most of these players are high school guys who have sign-ability issues which means if you don't sign them you don't get anything in return for that pick. This means the team is at a disadvantage and will have to overpay in order to get a good player.

Well Blanks has nowhere to play for the Padres and it would be beneficial to them to trade him away unless the NL adopts the DH rule next season. It may take more than a 5th OF but I wouldn't be surprised if it were something like Gindl and Rogers that would get that deal done. Rogers would be able to be a bullpen arm or a starter whatever the Padres would think will work best for them. I don't see much of anything being traded away for Blanks and a Gindl and Rogers deal is a pretty good trade off for the Brewers and the Padres. What this does is give the Brewers more options and cheap options to fill 1B and 3B. I actually believe McGehee will be traded this off season for a bullpen arm or two.

Nate, there are good players found in every round of every professional draft. Yes it's easier with a first round pick. Yes it's more likely if we throw a wad of cash at a kid that slips due to money. But also, yes, you can find very good talent in the second round without throwing a boatload of money at some "name" prospect.

Wouldn't that be something. We lose Prince, sign Reyes and come away with no first round picks because of this stupid system they have in place.

Kid? That comment shows how under the radar the Nats really are. Michael Morse was one of the premier sluggers in the NL last year. He hit .303/.360/.550 with 31 HR and 95 RBI, and he's absolutely torched the Brewers. He's the reason they aren't interested in Fielder. They moved Morse to 1B full time. He's no kid either. He turns 30 in March.

Briggs, I am talking shortstops here. I forget the kids name that they like enough to dangle Desmond. I realize how good Morse was this year.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your post.

Anyway I agree. Everything I've read about the Nats involves OF and pitching.

I'm always trying to pillage players from teams in turmoil. What about trying to get Kevin Youkilis from the Red Sox to play 1st Base? Not that he's a lock to be on his way out, but it is also imo very conceivable the Red Sox would be willing to trade Youk. His value is something that I honestly have no clue on right now though, he's a unique player but has the injury issues which should keep his value tempered a bit.

I heard this on the radio yesterday, so I thought I'd throw it out there. How about a trade for Joey Votto? He'd be under control for 2 more years at a reasonable price. I know we'd have to give up a lot, but it would be awesome to get him.

Not going to happen and yes it would be awesome to get him but the Brewers would have to give the Reds every single minor league player the Brewers have to get him plus Braun.

It's hard to see the Cubs involved because even if they got Prince, they still don't have starting pitching so that's where their focus is going to be. Now if say it were a year from now and Fielder were available, the Cubs would be all over him.

Now barring a huge deal elsewhere, Boras may want the Cubs involved and be willing to wait a year. In that case, Fielder could accept arby from the Brewers and delay his FA until next year. Nobody mentions this as a possible strategy, but it's not out of the question.

Doubtful as a major injury in 2012 would cost Fielder $100 million or more...not gonna happen

I don't know what the Giants payroll looks like, but if you are the SF Giants how do you not go and get Prince? Your rotation is great, they just don't have any hitting. Adding Prince to that lineup would make them an instant favorite to win the NL Penant ... Especially since they won the World Series without him. Now you add that bat to the lineup. Look out.

As far as the Brewers. I really have no clue what they will do. I am a little in favor with A-ram coming to play 1B. (Unless the Cubs go get Fielder, then I am sure A-Ram will want back into Chi to play 3rd.) .... But what is wrong with A-Ram coming to play 1B? Let Gamel, Green, McGehee all fight it out at 3rd. Or trade one of them. But I do not want Green / Gamel being a bench player. I think their value is either starting or being traded.
