Horse slaughterhouse?

gypcasino

I had no idea such a thing existed. Thoughts?

Horse slaughterhouse fights to stay open

DEKALB, Ill. - This agricultural town is nicknamed Barb City because the spiky wire was perfected here. But the mayor receives postcards from animal activists saying it should be called the city of barbarians.

DeKalb is home to the last remaining plant in the United States where horses are slaughtered for human consumption. Except for a portion sold to U.S. zoos, the horse meat is shipped to be eaten by diners overseas.

The state banned such slaughters last month, and a federal judge could rule as soon as Thursday whether Cavel International Inc. can stay open while it appeals. A temporary order allowing it to operate expires after Thursday...

Yea buddy...

Unfortunately or fortunately in this case when our horses died (my parents owned a ranch for most of my youth) we sent them to the glue factory. I remember the vet telling us once that horse meat was used in pet food if I remember correctly. Outside of large predators such as lions and tigers, I don't see what use Zoos would have for it. However, how is it any different than butchering cattle? At least it's not dogs and cats, to each his own I guess.

I don't think horse meat is used in dog food anymore.

I also believe Americans do not eat horse meat because it is discussed in the Bible, isn't it?

It's actually funny, all over the world, people eat horses and dogs and don't think a thing of it, and here, it's just horrible to most.

What's that old irony, that more than half the people in the world have never once talked on the phone? That may be down to 48% because cell phone towers are going up all over Africa, but it's still astounding that most of the world is so vastly different than the USA.

They say that pigs are smarter than dogs and horses, yet most of us (obviously excluding devout Jews & Muslims) don't hesitate to eat them. eating a horse does seem kind of weird though, considering they aren't bred for food but rather to help humans. What I mean is, they aren't bred to maximize the qualities that would make them good to eat.

I think part of the aversion to eating horse in America comes from that. Considering that their main purpose is not to be eaten, it is seen by most people as garbage meat, something to be eaten only after everything else is unavailable. Same with dog.

I think Joe's exactly right. We have frames associated with stimuli and the manner in which they relate to each other, and they don't match up here.

- Horse Pet

- Pet Friend

- Don't eat friend

- Don't eat horse

We won't eat anything that we have been conditioned to view as a friend or something with human-like qualities.

That's probably due to the fact that dogs and horses are kept as pets, and relationships are made between the two. Dogs show emotion and have friendship qualities that pigs don't have.

Depends on the breed of pig. Some are really friendly.

Well, when you look at a pig or wild boar you see an animal that is fat. This means it's full of meat. Sounds like a good idea to eat it!

Dogs don't really have much meat on them. Especially wild dogs. Compared to other animals that we eat anyways.

Look at the animals we eat. They generally carry a lot of meat. There's a reason we call people who eat too much "cows" or "pigs". Because these animals naturally have a lot of body mass and volume relative to their displacement.

This makes for good eating!

As for horses? Well, they're a working animal. They were traditionally much more valuable as a worker than as food. They would pull plows, used for travel, etc. They aided in developing food and it was more practical to use them for this than to breed them for food. And when they die the meat won't be very good any longer as they worked hard their entire lives. This meat would then be given to the farm animals generally.

There's usually very good reason for why things are as they are. It doesn't make sense to use an animal for food when it was much more valuable in so many other cases, including creating more food. Certain animals have a lot of meat and it's efficient to kill for food. And since they produce no really value to humans, using them as food is optimal.

Then why don't we eat cats? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
