2011-2012 Pro Hockey Thread

Hockey can't come soon enough. To me, it is much more fun to watch than football. If I wasn't already the commisioner a 12 man fantasy league...I would have loved to join your league RyDogg. I just think my head would start to spin if I did two leagues.

On another note, I'm thinking about buying the NHL Gamecenter package this year with the money I am going to make for winning fantasy baseball. I'm reading about the option to stream it through the PS3 to my 42 inch in HD in addition to being able to stream it on any computer. Since Charter doesn't even offer the Center Ice package in HD, this seems like the way to go. Does anyone have any experience with Gamecenter? Is it similar to MLB.tv? I had good experiences with that a few years ago to watch Brewer games when the Bucks were on FSN. If you are wondering, I lived in Madison, but my ISP gave me a Canadian IP address so Blue Jay games were the games that got blacked out.

Yeah 10 is fine. Especially if this is the first time for a lot of people. The first time I played I was in a 16 team league and that was pretty overwhelming when you're getting down to drafting random 3rd and 4th liners.

Not that it matters, but I've played fantasy hockey almost every year for the past 10 years.
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

I joined and checked the league settings out, but i'll just have to wing it strategy wise during the draft because i've never played fantasy hockey before.

In say baseball, i naturally understand come draft time in how to the value players by position when putting together a roster. For example, just a solid hitting SS or catcher is generally more valuable than a good but not elite firstbaseman/outfielder simply via supply at the positions. Looking at the hockey settings and then players stats though, i admit to feeling a bit lost because it's foreign to me even though i know most of the players.

Like say goalies, are they generally picked after the first 3-5 rounds and then a run usually is on them? Or is a top tier goalie kinda viewed like a top tier QB in fantasy football, worthy of a 1st/2nd round pick in the Rodgers/Brady area? When to pick offensive minded defenseman vs adding another high scoring wing or center? Plus, why are penalty minutes a stat when in most cases a penalty is a bad thing?

You can usually pick a good starting goalie (or 2) in rounds 3-5. That shouldn't be a problem considering there's 30 starting goalies and 10 teams, so there will be plenty for everybody. Try out some mock drafts before the actual draft.

If there's an elite goalie sitting there and you're picking late in the 2nd round or something then you could take him.

Just had the draft for a 16 team league. Pretty happy with what I ended up with and I'm happy I got a starting goalie. I picked second and ended up taking one in the 3rd round because that was the time last year when all the starting goalies started getting taken and with 28 picks between my 3rd round pick and 4th round pick I couldn't wait, so I got Cam Ward.

My team ended up being.

C - C - C - Ryan Kesler - Patrick Sharp - David Legwand

LW - LW - LW - Alex Ovechkin - Johan Franzen - R.J. Umberger

RW - RW - RW - David Backes - Justin Williams - Drew Stafford

D - D - D - D - D - Brent Burns - Joni Pitkanen - Dennis Seidenberg - Dan Hamhuis - Pavel Kubina

Utility - Martin Erat - Mikael Samuelsson - Derek Stepan

Bench - Colin Wilson - Pascal Dupuis - Frans Nielsen

Goalies - Cam Ward - Cory Schneider - Anders Lindback

I've had very limited success with Fantasy Hockey, teams that look good to me usually don't win. My strategy was to grab guys who are on the power play units, not sure if that makes any sense, but I figure it ups there scoring chances.

It's another year of seeing if they can get out of the cellar for the Islanders. At least they have some good young talent(whose careers will be destroyed by being) surrounded by (very crappy) veterans. Who knows if they'll even be on the island or even in the NHL, period, in a couple years. Hey, at least they're ahead of the Rangers in the standings!

Let's Go Islanders!

Picked up some Panthers tickets today vs. Pittsburgh and Washington. Looking forward to seeing Crosby and Ovechkin in person. And maybe the Panthers can finally break through and sneak into the playoffs, they aren't as terrible as previous years. Although something about the palm trees all around the hockey arena just isn't right.
