Snappers stop Rattlers 5-1

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI – The Beloit Snappers beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Beloit erased an early Rattlers lead with three runs in the second inning and sent Wisconsin to its sixth straight loss.

Wisconsin (66-72 overall, 28-40 second half) took the lead on an unearned run in the top of the second. Cody Hawn reached second on a dropped fly ball to left with one out. Brandon Macias followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, the Rattlers had runners at the corners with one out. But, Macias was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on a foul pop to shallow right. The Rattlers offense did not threaten

Beloit (69-68, 31-36) charged back to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Gonzales started the inning with a double. A one out single by Tyler Grimes tied the game as Gonzales scored. The Snappers went in front on an RBI grounder by Andrew Lee. Beloit scored their final run of the inning on a double steal. Jhonatan Arias took off for second base and drew a throw. Wang Wei-Lin raced home from third and beat the throw for a 3-1 Beloit advantage.

The Snappers added to their lead with single runs in the fourth inning and in the eighth inning. Leer’s sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 4-1. An RBI single by Lin – his fourth hit of the day – came in the eighth inning and made it 5-1.

Four Beloit pitchers held the Timber Rattlers to one unearned run on seven hits and combined for ten strikeouts. Michael Tonkin, making just his third start of the season, allowed an unearned run and struck out five for his fourth win of the season.

Wisconsin plays their final game of the 2011 season on Monday afternoon when they take on the Snappers at Pohlman Field. Charly Bashara (4-5, 5.53) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has AJ Achter (5-7, 4.66) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Final: @Great Falls 9, Helena 5

The Brewers got all their runs in the 6th but were already down 6-0 at that point. Drew Gagnon started and got hit around: 2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. K/BB nice at least. Not quite for Tommy Toledo: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 7/2 GO/FO. Adrian Williams had a nice day, 3-5 atop the order, and Yadiel Rivera was good too, 2-4 with a double, a walk, and his seventh steal, though he also committed two errors. Steve Felix went deep for the fifth time. Max Walla was hit by a pitch but struck out in his all three of his official at-bats.

One guy I had an eye on last year was Jonathan Pokorny. He got off to a bad start this year which is tough to overcome in the bullpen, but has posted very good numbers after their all-star break. 32.2 IP, 24 H, 14 BB (a little higher than desired), 30 K, 1.45 GO/AO, .211 BAA. For the year against lefties he posted 22IP, 16 H, 14 BB (not good), 24 K. If he can improve his control he may still have a future in the bullpen.

Final: Brevard County 6, @Daytona 4

The Sea Cows scored three runs in the top of the 9th to steal the game. Manuel Ruiz tossed three shutout innings before faltering in the 4th and allowing three runs. Eric Marzec followed that up with three one-run innings; Marzec has posted a very good ERA since being assigned to the FSL but has only nine strikeouts in 20.1 innings. Given that it was the last game of the year and he hadn't played for over half a week, I thought D'Vontrey Richardson might be done for the year, especially after he didn't start the game, but he took over early for Kentrail Davis and gave us something to whet our appetites with over the offseason with a four-hit, two-double denouement. Scooter Gennett was also excellent with three hits, including a triple, and a walk. Tyler Thornburg did not pitch.
Brevard County Top of the 9th
  • Juan Sanchez singles on a ground ball to left fielder Abner Abreu.
  • Brent Dean strikes out swinging.
  • Scooter Gennett singles on a fly ball to left fielder Abner Abreu. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Frank Batista replaces Yoannis Negrin.
  • Shea Vucinich walks. Juan Sanchez to 3rd. Scooter Gennett to 2nd.
  • Hunter Morris out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Taiwan Easterling. Juan Sanchez scores. Scooter Gennett to 3rd.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a ground ball to third baseman Matthew Cerda. Scooter Gennett scores. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Chuck Caufield singles on a line drive to left fielder Abner Abreu. Shea Vucinich scores. D' Vontrey Richardson to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Jordan Latham replaces Frank Batista.
  • Scott Krieger grounds out, shortstop Elliot Soto to first baseman Justin Bour.

Final: @Memphis 5, Nashville 2

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped their fourth straight contest on Sunday evening, falling 5-2 to the division-rival Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park.

Nashville - which out-hit Memphis 8-4 in the contest - left nine on base on the night, finishing just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Memphis took the night's first lead by plating an unearned run against Josh Butler in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out, Tyler Greene reached on a fielding error by Sounds shortstop Edwin Maysonet, stole second, and came home to score on Nick Stavinoha's double down the left field line, the lone hit permitted by Nashville starter Josh Butler through the first five innings of play.

After leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings, the Sounds finally broke through in the sixth against Memphis reliever Pete Parise.

With one out, Brandon Boggs (2-for-4) legged out his second double of the night before scoring the tying run on Caleb Gindl's RBI two-bagger down the right field line, which chased Parise from the contest [audio].

Nashville missed a chance to take the lead when Gindl was caught stealing third just prior to Mike Rivera hammering a double off the center field wall.

Memphis responded to the Sounds' score immediately, plating four runs off Butler in the home half of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5-1.

Adron Chambers and Greene opened the frame with consecutive singles before Stavinoha came through with his second run-scoring knock of the night, a two-run double to left. The two-bagger upped the slugger's Redbirds-record RBI total to 109 on the year.

The inning continued as Memphis loaded the bases when Andrew Brown drew a walk and Bryan Anderson was hit by a Butler pitch. Freddie Bynum followed by drawing a five-pitch walk from the right-hander to force home Stavinoha for a 4-1 lead. The Redbirds plated their fourth run of the frame when Pete Kozma lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

Nashville closed out the evening's scoring in the ninth with a single run against Memphis reliever Chuckie Fick. Gindl drew an inning-opening walk, stole second, moved to third on a Rivera flyout, and later scored on an Eric Farris fielder's choice groundout.

Jess Todd (2-4) was awarded the victory for the Redbirds after working 1 2/3 scoreless frames of relief.

Butler (9-8) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits over six innings of work.

Nashville will look to avoid a series sweep when the Sounds and Redbirds wrap up the 2011 season with a 1:05 p.m. Labor Day finale on Monday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (7-0, 1.21) will man the bump for Nashville to face Memphis right-hander Brian Broderick (7-6, 5.04).

Dan Meadows and Mike McClendon each tossed scoreless innings of relief, McClendon with two strikeouts.
