To all our Minor League Forum readers --

As you begin to digest another Daily Link Report, I'd like to direct everyone to this thread, on our Issues Forum.

Whether you are a family member or friend of a Brewer farmhand, or just a big Brewer fan who likes to follow the players throughout the system regardless of how fabulous a year it's been thus far on the big league level, please consider helping Brian defray the costs of the site by contributing, which will also keep all our forums, including the Minor League Forum, advertisement-free.

If you've come to appreciate the efforts here of Eric (Sessile), Conor (TooLiveBrew), Toby (And That), and our contributors (OK, and myself too I guess, eleven years running now), and love your Link Reports, transaction updates, and other feature topic threads here, we would be so thankful. As Brian notes, this is the first fundraiser in 15 months -- let's see if we can raise enough to take us through Milwaukee's 2013 three-peat, which would be partly fueled by the current minor leaguers.

Thanks again!

-- Jim

Stars Lose Nail-Biter to BayBears, 6-5
Huntsville Stars

Hainley Statia was injured sliding into second base at the end of the sixth inning. He left the game with two hits in four at bats including a three-RBI double. All nine of the starters reached base at least once.

The BayBears were led by A.J. Pollock and Ryan Wheeler who combined for five hits and five RBIs.

Dan Merklinger (9-9) took the loss allowing five runs on eight hits through six innings. The Stars bullpen continued to pitch well with Darren Byrd coming in and only allowing one unearned run to score through two innings.

The Stars scored four runs (3 ER) off of Tyler Skaggs in four innings. Reliever Clay Zavada picked up the win after three scoreless innings of work. Bryan Woodall got his fourth save in closing out the eighth and ninth innings. Woodall allowed one run to score in the ninth.

Mobile leads the series 2-1. With Tropical Storm Lee approaching, Sunday’s game has been moved to 1:03 p.m. CST. Sunday will be Church Bulletin Sunday presented by Willowbrook Baptist Church. Fans who present a Willowbrook Baptist Church bulletin will receive five general admission tickets for $5. The series finale is still scheduled for Monday at 1:03 p.m. CST. For more information about game time or promotions, call (256) 882-2562 or visit huntsvillestars.com. Don’t forget to keep up with the Stars on Facebook, Twitter and the official newsletter.

Whoever wrote that recap couldn't even be bothered to correct the score from yesterday; the first sentence listed the score as 2-0 before I changed it. Brock Kjeldgaard was 3-5 with a double, and Sean Halton was 2-4 with a walk and a double. Zelous Wheeler also doubled. Khris Davis was 1-4 with a walk. Merklinger fanned five and walked two.

Final: @Memphis 4, Nashville 1

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A four-run seventh inning propelled the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds to a 4-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park.

With the loss, Nashville (70-72) has dropped three games in a row and eight of its last 12 contests.

Nashville was held to seven hits overall and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Right fielder Brandon Boggs doubled twice while shortstop Eric Farris added two hits and a stolen base.

Memphis starting pitcher Adam Ottavino (7-8) gave up just one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work for the win. Victor Marte converted his PCL-leading 31st save to end the contest.

Nashville starter Amaury Rivas closed out his 2011 season by tossing five shutout frames in a no-decision. The right-hander allowed just two hits while walking and striking out five. He also had two sacrifice bunts while driving in the Sounds' lone run [audio].

Nashville scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning. Ottavino opened in the inning with a walk to right fielder Boggs, who moved to third on a hit-and-run with Patrick Arlis singling to right. Boggs would then score on a sacrifice bunt by Rivas.

The Redbirds took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh thanks to two Farris throwing errors at shortstop. Reliever Tim Dillard issued a one-out walk to Freddie Bynum and allowed a single to the rehabbing Nick Punto to start the rally. Nick Stavinoha then hit an infield grounder to Farris, who committed his first error of the frame that allowed Bynum to score. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Carpenter hit an inning-ending grounder to shortstop, but Farris tossed wide of the bag again that let Punto score another unearned run. Next batter Andrew Brown concluded the scoring with a two-run single to left field.

Dillard (4-2) was charged for four runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks in two innings in relief. Justin James pitched a perfect inning in his first game since re-joining the club from Double-A Huntsville.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue their series at 6:05pm CT on Sunday night at AutoZone Park. Nashville will send right-hander Josh Butler (9-7, 5.11) to the mound for his final start of the season.

Arlis was 1-3 with a walk in his first start of the year; the three at-bats doubled his yearly total.

Brewers Beat Missoula in Home Finale

By Nicholas Allen, Helena Brewers

The Brewers last home game of the 2011 season ended with the same result as the first, a victory over the Missoula Osprey. Helena jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished the lead. Tyler Cravy (3-4) earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings in which the right-hander surrendered just two hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.

Parker Berberet got the Brewers on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored John Dishon. Max Walla added an RBI single to give Helena a 2-0 lead. The Brewers broke the game open in the fourth with six runs off Missoula starter Jesse Darrah. Mike Nemeth doubled in a run and Tyler Roberts scored on an Osprey error to stretch the lead to four runs. Nemeth then scored on a single by Yadiel Rivera and leftfielder Ben McMahan highlighted the inning with a bases loaded triple that chased Darrah from the game and gave the Brewers an 8-0 lead.

Neither team then scored until the eighth when Missoula scored two unearned runs off of Brewers reliever Mark Williams. Gant Elmore answered for Helena with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning and the Osprey scored once in the ninth for the final margin.

Following Saturday's game, the Brewers will embark on a season-ending five-game road trip, with three games in Great Falls against the Voyagers and two games in Billings. In 2011, the Brewers are 4-9 against Great Falls and 6-8 versus the Mustangs. All Brewers' contests can be heard on 1340 AM KCAP and by clicking on the Gameday Audio link on www.helenabrewers.net.

Cravy helps Brewers win season's final home game

Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers pushed across six runs in the bottom of the third inning and breezed past the Missoula Osprey 9-3 on Saturday night in the team’s final game of the year at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena starting pitcher Tyler Cravy picked up the win after tossing six solid innings, allowing just two hits, no runs and no walks, while striking out nine. The win moved Cravy to 3-4 on the season.

The Brewers (10-23) managed their nine runs on just eight hits, thanks in large part to a wild effort from usually steady Missoula starter Jesse Darrah. Darrah fell to 5-2 on the season after picking up the loss after surrendering six hits, eight runs and three walks in just three innings of work. He also plunked a batter and surrendered a wild pitch — one of six in the game.

The Osprey (15-18) followed Darrah’s effort with a solid piecemeal relief effort from four pitchers. Helena did not score its final run until the bottom of the eighth when Gant Elmore singled in Mike Nemeth off Missoula’s Matt Sample in the hurler’s lone frame of work.

Left fielder Ben McMahan led the Brewers’ offense with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate — including a double and a triple — that knocked in three runs, while crossing the plate once himself.

Helena’s Yadiel Rivera, Parker Berberet, Max Walla, Nemeth and Elmore all plated runs on one hit apiece.

Brewers relievers Mark Williams and Alex Jones surrendered all three of the visitors’ runs. The pair combined to allow four hits and a pair of walks in just over an inning of work apiece, while also plunking a pair of Missoula batters each.

Helena Box Score

In 83.1 combined innings at Wisconsin and Helena, 22-year-old RHP Tyler Cravy has a wonderful 107 K's and 28 walks, so the season-long 5.29 ERA hides his stuff; Ben McMahan's slugging .529...

Brevard's season ends Sunday, Nashville, Huntsville and Wisconsin Monday, and Helena Thursday. Unlike last year's Pioneer League champs who kept things going deep into September, next week's Helena games will be more of a curiosity only.

Some nice individual efforts to get excited about in the system, thankfully at the AAA level in particular, but in terms of wins and losses, just a brutal 2011.

And yes, we know it's about development. But it's sure easier to type about victories and winning streaks...

Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. – Brevard County Manatees first baseman Hunter Morris broke the franchise’s single-season home run mark with his 19th homer of the season, in Saturday night’s 2011 home finale against the Daytona Cubs.

Morris hit a two-run homer on a 0-1 pitch off of Daytona’s Frank Batista in the eighth inning.
The record-breaking blast put the ‘Tees on top 3-2 as Brevard County went on to defeat the Cubs 4-2.

Earlier this season, Brock Kjeldgaard also tied the record, but he was promoted to Double-A Huntsville before he could break it. Jose Santos also hit 18 homers for the Manatees back in 2001.

Morris has played in 125 games for Brevard County this season and is currently third in the Florida State League with 230 total bases and tied for fourth in extra base hits with 52.

He leads all current Manatees players with 28 doubles, 66 RBI, a .463 slugging percentage and an OPS of .763. Morris is also second on the team in runs with 75 and in hits with 135.

In late May, Morris was called up to Double-A Huntsville for four games and hit .353 (6-for-17).

A native of Huntsville, Ala., Morris was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University.

Brevard County closes out the 2011 season this evening, on the road at Daytona.

Logan Schafer and Martin Maldonado, Saturday, became respectively, the 199th and 200th former Huntsville Stars to graduate to the majors. Schafer struck out against the Astros' David Carpenter in the top of the 9th. Maldonado came in as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the 9th and handled a foul pop that inning.
