Furcal with a big RBI hit in the 8th vs. Chapman. Who was that yesterday saying that Furcal only hits against MIL and nobody else? Again, Doug should have tried harder. No excuse to run Yuni out there everyday. He stunk well before the trading deadline; it's not like his suckiness crept up out of nowhere. We should have a major league SS.

He's had 3 good games. Those games have pulled him up to average in his time with the Cardinals. His OBP is .298 in St. Louis and .284 on the season. He's not good.

Better than Betancourt? Yes. But still not good.

Not to mention what a huge injury risk he is. Not a guy I would've wanted to be counting on in September/October. I applaud Doug for not trading for him.

Now, a guy like Barmes on the other hand...............

Ya, that was me saying that. Certainly having a good night against the Reds completely invalidates the fact that before last night, 8 of Furcal's 9 RBIs as a Card came against the Crew, and all 4 of his homeruns.

As I pointed out the day before that, Furcal's time as a Cardinal, offensively, was his best output of the season, but it matched Yuni's second worst month of production. It's easy at the end of August, to sit here and say, "well we would have had the same offensive production, but also better defense" and you would be entirely right, but you're saying that with hindsight. Coming off the months of production Yuni had beforehand, it would have seemed like a drastic drop-off, from already poor production.

Let me put it this way; if you take the awful month at the plate Yuni had in August, and mix in better defense, do you have a shortstop you feel is a "major league shortstop"? No, I don't think so, but you do have Rafael Furcal.

Harping on Melvin for not getting Furcal is pointless, we'd be in no better spot than we are now.
