Not watching the game, but I see Yo has a lot of Ks today. So why so many HRs? Is he just grooving fastballs, hanging breaking stuff?

He's not a big game pitcher.

Not sure I understand the sarcasm. If today isn't the definition of a big game, where the team behind us in the division is about to sweep us at home, I'm not sure what is.

My exact quote when I raised the question earlier was:

"Anyone else worried that Yo might not be a Big Game pitcher? Any evidence to the contrary that isn't coming immediately to mind?"

Like I said, off the top of my head I don't recall him pitching in a big game where he has gone out and been a stopper. Now maybe it is because we haven't been competitive for most of Gallardo's career and he was hurt a majority of 2008 but I think it is a reasonable question when one of our "aces" gets outpitched by a rookie in a series such as this.

Sure today's a big game but every game matters. This is just one game in the season. It's not like this is a one-game playoff. Yo has proved he's a good pitcher in his career. He just didn't have it today (not to mention the Cardinals have been playing pretty good lately). And I'm sure the number of "big games" Yo has pitched in in his career is too small a sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions.

Yuni B is getting these relatively meaningless hits because the last thing pitchers want to do with a big lead is walk players. So they don't pitch around the zone against him like normal to induce weak popups. Those AB's should have little influence on lineup decisions.

That's Prince. Wait....that's any hitter. I rather have him cool off now, and get hot late September into October. Only chance this team has in the post-season is a red hot Braun, Fielder, and probably Weeks, Hart, and Plush too. Because as good as this rotation has been, I just have no confidence they can hang with the Phillies or Braves rotations unless the Brewers best hitters are all red hot.

Excellent response. I definitely expected a better performance from Yo though. Even a "quality start" of 6-ish IP, 3ER would have been acceptable to me today given the opponent. To give up 8 and have them all be ER...well let's just say he didn't pitch well today.

Can you look up all his "big games" and show how he has done, or do you just want to post speculation?

I expected better too. I also expected at least 1 if not 2 wins this series. I think they definitely gave away Tuesday's games and yesterday they played bad defense (from what I've heard, I didn't actually get a chance to watch the game). Then they gave up another GS to the pitcher. Hopefully they can go into Houston and sweep or at least take the series. And maybe we'll get a chance to see a Taylor Green start.

I wasn't complaining about Prince. Just stating the facts. He's been cold lately, and yet other than this series the team was more than survivng anyway. SOme of that is the competition, some of that is pitching and some of it is other guys getting the job done. I don't think they will have any success in the playoffs if Prince gets in a similar funk, but even if he's just average they should have a shot so long as the pitching doesn't fall off a cliff.

Cards had won 3 of their last 7 coming into this series. They weren't playing well before they got here. We gave them the first game of this series and then served up batting practice the last 2 games.

It all depends on how far you go back. It was actually 4 of 8 if you go back that far but they took 3 of 4 from the Pirates before getting here. Add in the two games before today and it would've been 5 of 6.

((really straining for a silver lining))

getting swept is the best thing that could have happened to the Crew

a glum clubhouse with some reality-based introspection.

going to Houston (where I will be this weekend! up 2 sections from the Brewers's dugout, row 3 on Sunday, what what?) all hot-headed to smack a beat down on the Astros.

Doubters creep up out of the woodwork instead of the glossy SI-parade to the playoffs.

Can forget about catching the Phillies - focus on rest / rotation stacking over an extra Miller Park NLCS game

The haze of August settles & Doug knows the team can, nay - HAS TO - be better. (read: Free T Green)

some K-Rod / Axford rest - helluva nice midseason All-Star break 3 days off.

Oh to be 7.5 games up in SEPT and not (yet anyway) freaking out...

I love the way LaRussa managed this game. Not sure why BA and Rock keep talking about it like he has lost his mind.

He knew how important this series was and he managed this game like it was the 7th game of the world series(other then the rookie starter).

ps. Not that it really matters but why pinch hit counsell instead of Green or Logan S?

All good points. People who are freaking out need to calm down. While I didn't want this to happen, it's definitely a reality check. It's also not the end of the world. A 7.5 game lead with 24 games to go still looks good.
